Hello everyone. I have a 1984 Ford Ranger 4x4 with the 2.8L v6 with the manual transmission. The problem I am having is when the truck is cold, it starts amazingly, like cranks right over. But when it has warmed up and is hot and I shut it off and try to start it, it either won’t start or I have to hold it full throttle and it still takes forever to start. It just cranks and cranks and cranks and if I’m lucky I can hold it to the floor and it will finally start. But sometimes it won’t even start. Any suggestions? I am getting really frustrated with it.

Do you have all the original emissions/carb/etc junk on it or has it had a Duraspark swap done?

What happens if you pump the gas pedal 2-3 times when warm and try to start it? Could be a choke issue... IE, your choke is stuck closed, or the carb is leaking into the intake somehow and it's flooding itself. Hold the throttle open would clear that eventually. Just a guess on that.

Original carb and shit is still on it. When I just pump the throttle nothing happens but when I hold it to the floor the entire time it cranks it normally starts but sometimes it doesn’t.

Hold the choke open by hand and look down the throat with the engine off and give the throttle a quick pump. Do you see any gas squirt out?

And also just out of curiosity, I have never heard of the duraspark swap, I am 15 and just getting into this stuff, what exactly is that.

Duraspark swap involves replacing the original computer controlled carburetor, ignition system and distributor with a much simpler system from a Pinto or Mustang II. Usually people find that it runs better too. It is VERY hard to find the distributor for it unless you have a good junkyard with a bunch of old cars or get lucky.

I appreciate your motivation to work on this yourself, always good to see kids wrenching on things :icon_thumby:

Could you maybe find a article or something and link it here so I can see exactly what it is

Sure thing -

If you click the Tech Library link at the top of the page there is a TON of good info listed in there.

i would go to a crank trigger ignition and a solid 2bbl 350 cfm style.

or adapt a msd setup.

be about 1000 bux for all new but work awesome.
