What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

.....whelp.... said luck ran dry. Ironically. Since the floor is soaked now šŸ™„šŸ˜†

For once... I gambled and won.

100$ communistical mid length header advertised to fit 74-82 pinto and 82-92 ranger... fits just fine on my 96. I'm assuming it's not listed as compatible with the 96 due to no provision for the EGR? Good enough for me šŸ‘all snugged up and happy for now. Not the easiest job.. but it'll be well worth it. Time to wash up and call it a day. We'll be back at it next weekend.

So far I've only had to swear at the egr fitting.. I'll take it.

Looks like I've lucked out with where the o2 placement is as well. I was only intending on a test fit/mock up type deal with the header today because I forgot to bring along a drill and a step bit to make myself a nice little bunghole.... but stock placement is far enough back I'll be able to put it post-collector.

The real question is... when is all this "luck" gonna run out? šŸ™„

Is the muffler between those two flanges on the old set?

Put the roof racks on the 2011. I have a Lowe's run to make today and the 12 foot lumber won't fit in the bed.

The muffler is back behind the cab. Where I took the Sawzall to on the old set is right before the cat.

I'm not even gonna be able to scrap the old cat šŸ™„ the city built a new homeless shelter right next door to the scrapyard last year.. at first.. they wouldn't accept cats from people who arrived on foot or on a bike... now they won't accept cats from anyone šŸ™ƒšŸ˜‘

Did a transmission fluid and filter change today, along with installing a new pan that has a drain plug, so I never have to do this again. Even a drop cloth didn’t contain all of the mess.

Anyway, this is the pan, as removed, with no cleaning. On a 5R55E with 250,000 miles, and has the tow package trans cooler.

I am astounded, the previous owner really loved this thing.

Even after draining out what is left in the picture, there is no clutch material or metal shavings at the bottom. Just a very thin film on the pan itself, barely thick enough to notice. And very little on the magnet either.

Thats looks real good!
I am about to do the same to my 97 in the next week or so.. I'll post some pictures when i do!

Been hearing an exhaust leak on the '97 lately under the cab that's getting louder, crawled under at lunch and don't see anything obvious but pulled on the cat and it flexes at the back end where it shouldn't so that's fun... I mean the 100% stock exhaust system is all still there at 213k miles so I don't blame it for anything, I've had to put hose clamps around the heat shields since that rattle was super annoying a couple years ago, instead of putting money in it I'll probably just pull it and weld up the cracks :) We'll see if I can get that done this weekend...

Better practice welding tinfoil while upside down....

I'm hoping I can get that section of the exhaust out otherwise it isn't doable... welding the thin metal isn't an issue, I know tricks for that, it's never really pretty but I've welded up the exhaust on my 4 wheeler from '89...

Washed the stupid bird crap off. Truck looks better now though :)

Send us a pic with just the smart bird crap on it!

A while ago my high beams went out on the Missing Linc, so I ordered the multi function switch. Last night when I was coming home from my birthday party, the low beams went out, so I figured it was time to install it. Thank goodness it was a dry celebration! I drove home with the flood lights on the rack above.

It’s actually a pretty simple swap. The biggest problem was I had was getting the 37 year old plastic covers on the steering column to line back up. I had to fix one of the screw holes with the baking soda super glue trick. It was on the inside, so it doesn’t show.

Like always, curiosity, I took the old multi function switch apart, which was also pretty simple. It has four tiny Torx screws and it comes apart in two halves. I was lucky that when I pulled it apart, the side where the plugs plug-in was laying flat on the table, and I pulled off the side closer to the driver. If you do it the other way around, some contacts for the turn signals fall out.

I had to break out a tiny bit of the gray plastic at one spot to get my Torx bit and holder down to that one screw.

The low beam/high beam contacts are a simple little pivot bar that snaps back-and-forth on four contacts. Obviously, one side of the contacts are tied together because there’s only three bayonet connectors on the outside.

We all know what a set of burnt contacts looks like, but these actually looked pretty clean. There was a spot on the bar side, something black and built up almost like a piece of plastic. I think it might be dried and burnt grease they used to lube the contacts. It was hard like a rock, and I think it was just preventing the bar from pushing down on the Contacts when it flipped.

I picked that off with a pick, and then used my Dremel Moto tool with a tiny wire brush to clean all the contacts on the inside, and the bayonet connectors on the outside.

There is no doubt in my mind that it will work perfectly, so I put it on the shelf as a spare.

I had assumed it was going to be all kinds of printed circuit boards and such, but I should’ve realized it would be pretty simple from a 1987. If I had known, I could’ve saved my $30, and it would’ve taken 15 minutes longer than swapping it with the new one.
