What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

The rules are changing for farm-use tags in Virginia in July, according to the Va. DMV website. A registration process is being put in place to replace generic "Farm Use" tags. I believe another member here said Pennsylvania did the same thing a couple of years ago.

Don't worry, I'll get my Ranger fixed.

I spent the morning going to the three pull a parts in Atlanta, looking for the last few wheels I need for the various trailer projects.

Within 10 minutes at the East location, I got three 14 inch bullet holes and one 14 inch steelie. I spent another half hour going up and down the Ford rows and the truck rows, but no luck finding a 15 inch steelie. Then I went to the other two pull a parts for a couple hours, no glory. Of course, that 15 steelie is the one I need now, and the other ones were just stock for what’s coming up..

Ran out of energy, but some progress.

on the ranger.....hard start.......38 psi on the feed side....that filter is getting full....she runs on 3-4 psi head psi at the injection pump which it has....i suspect a drainback issue....

the bronco.....pretty sure my 9 inch is dying...that pinion makes me suspect...i know the gear lash is horrendous so i suspect gears are needed.......pretty sure wheel bearings out back are about due...looks like 400ish to rehash it with new gears and solid spacer. or a turn key new unit from speedway for 659 shipped...

not an anticipated issue...so of course...is it regear time or not??...
4.88 to 5.x gears will render it unstreetable with the new 33 in tires...sigh...

gotta love it...

with the bronco.... i was frustrated enough to look at newer rangers....

Went to the Shoney’s shack tire guy and put a couple of my good tires on a couple of those rims I picked up yesterday. I figured out a couple more salvage yards I could try for that 15 inch steelie.

I did my brakes all the way around, back early in 2023. Everything looked good and was functioning, so I turned the rotors, installed new front pads, turned the drums, and installed new rear shoes. I've noticed my rear brakes won't stay adjusted, even though I cleaned and lubed the adjusters, and they're easy to adjust. I also noticed my right (passenger) front tire is covered in brake dust just days after washing the truck. Jacked up the truck and tried to spin the wheel. The caliper is dragging. I don't know if it's a caliper issue or a bad rubber line. Back in 2010 I replaced everything with rebuilt parts and installed all new hoses. Essentially, I rebuilt the brake system excluding the master cylinder, brake booster, and ABS module. I guess it's time to have another round of brake building. I only have around 5000 miles on the new pads and shoes. Hopefully I won't have to touch them or the drums and rotors. New calipers and lines up front and hopefully a little cleaning on the rear with set the auto adjusters right. I may have to side line the Ranger, if me and a fellow can make a deal on his '06 F150 FX4. I'm not a Ford guy, but damn, if I don't find good deals on them more than Chevys.

On the rear adjusters, double check that that adjustment spindle isn’t installed backwards, which is easy to do. Instead of clicking a hair tighter when the time comes, regular vibration can actually cause them to spin the other way if they’re installed backwards. Just a thought.

I don't know if it's different on some trucks, but mine can only go one way for the little pawl to push the adjuster down to tighten it. If it's installed the other way, the paw doesn't touch the notched wheel.

I drive down a foggy road, picked up some new wheels, and cleaned my shop in prep to installed new OffRoad Design greasable Kevlar leaf spring bushings tomorrow.

You've mentioned this Shoney's tire guy a few times now. Not many Shoney's left, so you wouldn't happen to be taking about the one if Forsyth would you? Need to play some musical tires before long and the prices I've been quoted locally might make the drive to Forsyth worth it.

Also, have you got a photo of the 15" wheel you're looking for? I'll keep my eyes open and see if I can spot one for you around here.

Nice! That style would be on my short list if I were going to go back to 15s.

Took me forever to find a style I liked used. I’m excited to air down the 33x15s vs my current 32x17s. Should give me more cushion for the pushing off-road.

Not just more cushion. Lot more sidewall so is should give more contact patch when aired down which means better traction, and more flexability which should result in them holding up better when driving over jagged obstacles.

I think that's how it works anyway, I don't do much driving in terrains that would require airing down.

Went and played in the snow, much better snow for driving in than last time. First dumb thing is that battery post clamp I replaced back in April broke this morning (or sometime in the last month) so I installed one of the others I had "in stock". Checked the oil and now it's retaining oil to the point to actually change color! Once I met up with my friends one was stuck on a stump, conveniently I brought a chainsaw and after some screwing around there was a little oopsie and he nicked the transmission pan of his Jeep... so we took out a body panel screw and cut off a piece of a rope tire plug and it was runable for the rest of the day. I pulled out a couple people, got pulled out a couple times, good day.

The Shoney’s is closed, has been for years. There’s like an oversized garage on the back, left corner of the property, and that’s where this guy operates out of. I bring him a new valve stem, he takes the old tire off the wheel, puts my new tire on the wheel, installs the valve and balances it for $20. I have to take the old tires away and my impression is whether you do two or 20 it would still be $20 a set.

He’s about a mile outside 285 on Peachtree industrial, on the service road. That’s in DeKalb County, not Forsyth, it’s not that far up.

And the wheel is the 80s 15” steelie

Usually they’re a flat or silver/gray, and the highlights on the holes are black. New, they are flat or silver/gray, and the highlights on the holes are black. The trucks that had them usually had trim rings. I just need one clean straight wheel, I’m going to clean it and sand it and paint it anyway. And BTW, I’m looking for $25 like you find them in the Pull a Part. I know where I can buy one now, but not at that price

And thank you!!!
