4.7 v8 / 5.9 v8
4wd

Has anyone here ever owned a dakota or ram 1500 4x4

94-01 Dodge Rams with the 5.9 are good trucks. Just avoid the auto trannys.

Parts for the manual trans are going obsolete too...
Arent they an NV? I would think aftermarket would pick them up.

why did you say 94-01 dodge rams 5.9 are good trucks. Why should i avoid the auto trannys.
360's a good engine. But the trannys are junk. Also the last 1/2 ton 4wd with a solid front axle

Durango's disovled in road salt like nothing since the 70's.There is no Dodge anymore, Fiat renamed them after a male sheep.

4.7 V8s had some major top end oiling issues. I'd avoid any truck or Jeep that has that engine.

We had a few 1st gen Durangos and a variety of pickups at work. All seemed to be pretty good vehicles, no major issues to speak of. My father in law had a late 90's Dodge 3/4 ton that had a ton of miles on it, think it lost reverse or something so he sold it and the guy who bought it is still driving it and that's been 5 years now at least.

I think people cry about Dodge automatics a lot but neglect kills anything. Everyone poo-poos the GM 4L60E too but I made one last 200k, might still be alive now for all I know. Some of it is luck and there are definitely poorly designed things out there but if something isn't taken care of, it'll fail.

unlike a 340 or a 360....the only thing a 4.7 is good for is a lake bottom ornament.

318 dakota....

My first pickup was a 86 Dakota V6, 4x4, 8' bed. It got 14 mpg because the front spoiler was missing and sold it because the transmission clunked when I put it in gear. ( I was new to trucks back then. Now days I would check the universal joints in the drive shaft.)

My other Dodge was a 2005 Ram 2500 4x4 with the hemi. It was lifted on 35s and got 12 mpg because of the lift, tire roll resistance, gearing, and missing front spoiler. The previous owner must have towed a lot with it because it had a transmission oil temp gauge. It also must've been pushed out of time because sometimes it fought against starting and when it did, it started hard! Sold that for the Ranger.

My uncle worked at Dodge City, so I am biased towards Dodge. If mine that were abused by previous owners last as well as they did, you should be able to find a good one yourself.

FIFY

They had more going wrong than just oiling lol.

@Gary DuBois ,
I had a 94 Dakota extra cab, it was the least stock vehicle I've ever owned. The original owner was my machinist buddy who bought it new instead of a 94 Corvette.

The amount of work he put into making that 5.2l Magnum run better and the chassis out perform the 94 Corvette...whew!! It put over 350 HP to the ground and with it's custom 4" exhaust, there was zero question who knew it.

The heavy duty auto transmission did go out, at the same time it developed an issue I could not resolve fast enough, regretfully, because of this I let it go.

While clearly not a super car, it sure did a great impression.
