What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

thank you. I didn’t mean to create more work, but considering all I’ve learned from this site, I wrote it up to help others. Thank you again.

I hunted down a rattle that was occurring at about 1400, 2100, 2800, and 3500 rpm. That means it would likely occur at 700 rpm because harmonics, resonance, and all that kind of physics. It sounded like it was coming from behind the instrument cluster most of the time, and would shift toward the center of the dash at times. I put my head down under the dash and continuously pressed the gas pedal in an attempt to narrow it down. I then got an mechanics stethoscope which didn't help much until it placed against the inside of the firewall nearly above the transmission. I then took the radio out and tried directly behind the radio where it appeared to be the loudest. I couldn't find any loose clips or fasteners under the dash, so I popped the hood open and noticed the nut securing the wiring harness that goes to the computer module had almost spun off the bolt. I tightened it and added some threadlocker and tested. I didn't hear the rattle anymore, but I've been through the "I think I found it" routine many times when working on vehicles. The rattle is loudest in the morning when everything is cold. So, I guess I will find out tomorrow when driving to work.

looking at the old beast today.

really hard to not just build a new truck....my time is so slim.

just to get the cab safe...figuring 300 to 400 or so hours and 1600 in metal and parts...that is just substructure.....not including the cage....and reusing the side windows and getting a new windshield.

i was going to do a 1/4 rectangle 2x4...for rails and cross structure to tie the cage into and make removable floor panels for maintenance...

but now i am leaning more towards what gwaii did. have to do something soon...

i am anxious to get my little ranger back from my son. i hope its still in good shape :( since you know how kids are with other people's stuff.

i have been driving his 05 mazda6 and i have done all kinds of easy cheap junkyard upgrades to it. he is going to think its a new car when he gets in it since it now has black leather heated seats, lowered on h&r sports, huge sway bars, shifts properly, and looks nicer.

i really hope my ranger is still good though

sounds like you should save it until Christmas

We are goping he gets home from thr army for christmas. He put in his terminal leave but its not been approved yet so he is not sure if he will be out in time to be home for christmas

....have to re-fill the bronco with antifreeze....blew the upper radiator hose off and dumped er right out....

adjusted brakes for balance ....well...front and rear drums...so they still suck in regards to balance but the pedal is alot higher...

put new steering linkage on...sort of noticable improvment...

and hacked up a scrap piece of wood and zip screwed 20 dollars with of acrylic for a rear cab window to keep some heat in..... rocky seems to like it....

with any luck i will be home in a week to winterize it a bit better and put better tires on it...the 31s are too small with 410 gears...

i noticed a weird vide at 60...the joint is a bit worn..and the pinion looks a bit loose too. but not leaking yet. will have to address that when i get back. probably a good time to pull the spool out and put the locker in it i guess.....which means i will have to figure out an e brake....damn it...this crap never ends..one good thing about the spool....just lock the wheel full stop and it locks up to park.

laid out a few ideas for the ranger. nothing easy about that deal.

I love Craigslist.

Baby likes ‘em. A little Rustoleum…

I changed the oil on my Ranger today and was over inflating the tires when I heard a pop, followed by oil leaking. I shut it off and mopped up the pond of oil. It looks like a hose blew off my remote oil filter mount, if that happened while I was driving the engine would have been toast before I got it stopped. I was pretty pissed but I guess I was lucky.
Earlier this summer the gas line to my carb burst as I was driving into the garage that would have caused a fire if I'd been driving down the road. That's 2 bullets I've dodged, now I'm waiting for the next one.

Why were you overinflating your tires?
;missingteeth;

You guys do a lot more mechanical custom work than I do, most of my stuff is cosmetic, but I’m curious about this one. How are the tires piped to the oil change system so that when you put too much air in the tire, the oil line popped? Sounds like a cool set up I might want to duplicate on one of my projects.

That's how I read it at first too... Lol

I inflate the tires to the max 44 psi during winter storage and run 35 psi when driving it. The hope is that the tires will flat spot a little less while sitting.
The hose blowing off wasn't related to the tire pressure, I was inflating the left front tire when the hose popped so I was able to turn off the ignition pretty quickly. The remote filter mount is behind the bumper and I hadn't retightenend the clamps since installing it 4 years ago, even though I know better. I guess that's what out of sight, out of mind means.

No one should ever feel compelled to actually answer my ridiculous comments…

Our Ranger's roommate is back for the winter. I barely have enough room to walk around either of them but I can live with it. Most of what I'll be doing to the Ranger over the off season will be either underneath it or under the hood and once I get it on stands up off the trailer deck a couple feet it will be super easy to work on.
