E four Oh d

If you are going to rebuild a transmission, why not just rebuild what you have.

It has been rebuilt. Didn't take. That's why I'm asking about a better replacement.

I don't think there's a 'better' replacement option. But a legitimately rebuilt 4R100 should be just fine in that truck.

+1

There is nothing inherently wrong with that transmission, especially in a F-150.

Looking at the "other" thread I posted when his trans first went out. It was July 2018. So it's been a while since the rebuild, but still no heavy pulling. He spent almost $2k to have it rebuilt the last time. He would rather get a better trans, it seems he just got screwed on the rebuild.

I'd honestly be tempted by a junkyard transmission over spending $2k on a rebuild. Especially if it came from a wrecked truck.

Usually they are not much of a bargain unless you go the u-pull-it route with like a month warranty.

Dad looked into one for his '05 F-150. It was like $1500 w/ 150k miles vs $2k for a reman.

So he did the right thing and had my brother rebuild it for a couple hundred bucks in parts lol.

Ouch. Didn't realize they were asking that much these days.

When you've accumulated two spare 4R70W's and an AOD in a storage unit you pay monthly for, their perceived value goes through the floor.

I dunno, I had a 97 Expedition with the 5.4 and an E4OD, thing had close to 300K on it when I sold it, never had a trans issue, at least not for me. Guy I bought it from said he never did anything to the transmission except fluid changes ever 30K, same for his father in law who was the original owner.

Looking for a better trans than the E40d that bolts to the 5.4. My dad had his rebuilt a year or so ago and it is slipping again. He hasn't pulled anything heavier than a Acura CL since the rebuild. Will a bigger/better transmission bolt up? If so which one. @adsm08 @19Walt93 @RonD
Rebuilt means different things to different people. I don't think I saw 4 E4OD failures in all the years we sold them and we sold a ton of plow trucks. One of my customers towed a huge camper to Alaska and back behind his F350 dually with no problems, and E4OD shouldn't even notice an Acura behind it. I'd find a qualified trans guy and have him go through the current transmission instead of spending a bunch of money to adapt something else in there.

You might want to beef up the floor, then.

I think we found one in Savannah GA. 50k miles $750+shipping. We will see. Im thinking about going to get it to save the shipping fees.

Possible Scam. Pops called him and got a different price dor trans but shipping to AR was the sam as FL from GA ???

I have a friend that does transmissions, and there's many different levels of transmissions you can buy that are the same with different parts... Plus there's little things the guys "in the know" do to help things live... I've watched my friend rip apart a trans, throw stuff in random places (he's done a LOT of most of the normal stuff), chuck some stuff in the trash, pull out a drill and start drilling behind seals and such to relieve pressure and stuff in the valve bodies, buys extra parts, uses half of one and half the other because one company makes a better one of the other and so forth... Go to a good shop, not Aamco or something similar as he says those guys use/sell bare bones minimums to make the most profit... Go to a diesel truck shop or something (I know it's a gasser, but they'll know a guy...) and ask if they do it or could give recommendations, the big diesel guys know how to break stuff :)
