50,000 RPM wrangler...

I think people need to have a special license for one of those. And the giant camper trailers. Or if we're not gonna make that mandatory then just throw the license thing out and let natural selection have at it.
In NH an 80 year old with a passenger car license can drive a dual rear wheel, Greyhound bus sized camper based on an F550 but the auto dealers association recommended I get a DOT medical card to road test customers' F350's and bigger because I was "driving them for personal gain" since I was at work being paid. State legislators are mostly old people who can afford campers. I guess if an 80 year old runs over you with his camper you aren't as dead as you'd be if I ran over you with an F350.

I am usually in favor of natural selection when it comes to idiots. The problem with these things is that they might select me…

Its even worse now. With this lane assist, wait until the class A motors homes have it and the driver uses it and leaves the seat to make a sammich.

They already do have it. A YouTuber I watch bought a massive toter home. Basically a semi. 15+L type deal. It has lane assist and a but wiper and alarms and whistles and you name it

Interesting! Where can I get that option?

Happens more often than is reported. People have too much money and not enough brains. Tells you right in the owner's manual how to properly setup your vehicle to tow behind an RV...course there are a lot of vehicles out there that are not capable of that. However, Jeep is one of the very well known automakers out there that have the capability, its just the owner's don't have the capability to follow simple instructions. Many Jeeps are very simple, transfer case in neutral, transmission in park. Many of the newer Jeeps with the exception of the Wrangler and the Gladiator are all electronic shifted transfer cases, usually there's a small button somewhere in the console you have to press and hold down for a few seconds with a pen in order for the transfer case to shift to neutral.

The Wrangler and the Gladiator both have manually shifted transfer cases...so simply turning the ignition to the on position (you don't even need to start the vehicle), shifting the transmission to neutral, shifting the transfer case to neutral, then shifting the transmission back to park, and releasing the parking brake and it is ready to tow on all 4 wheels.

People are just too damn lazy to RTFOM. If its not flashing directions on one of the many nonsense screens in the car they have no clue.

Do the Rubicons still have manual shift transfer cases? :dunno:

A plausible scenario I could see happening if it is electronic shift transfer case (that for some reason has a neutral setting?) Would be if they got the thing in 4low first and then pushed the switch to neutral without putting the transmission in neutral and then just assumed that the switch did its job without actually looking at the indicator lights. Still extremely stupid but I could picture an average car owner doing that.

I've gotten many phone calls from people saying "hey my truck is stuck in 4 low can you fix it?) To which I reply "yea, put the transmission in neutral and try again".
Yep, a surprising number of newer Jeeps have manual transfer cases and a few newer vehicles (most notably Dodge trucks) have a button for a neutral setting on the electric transfer case.

My guess is the guy had the manual case and didn’t have the ignition on to see the indicator light and yanked the lever too far. Still very dumb though. I have always been paranoid about doing something dumb so when I put a transfer case in neutral, I double and triple check, then if I can I rock the vehicle or if not pull very slow and watch it to make sure we are good to go.

Don't forget the complacency factor. It's possible he had another Jeep before this one and flat towed it so often, he just got careless.

Being honest and lazy here; can you flat tow a Ranger? My Hayes manual says not without disconnecting the driveshaft but I never checked the owners manual. (Thinking long tows, not a quick unstuck.

That’s what’s great about old stuff, it’s pretty easy even if your “aging.”

Ive heard with a 4wd you need to take off back driveshaft, not sure on a 2wd. I once pulled a 4wd on a dolly some 12 miles, let the engine idle the whole time so oil would be splashing around in transmission (manual-in neutral)

Put the t case in neutral and tow with a 4wd

On a 2wd w/auto trans, always wise to pull the driveshaft. If you don’t, it will burn up the tranny pump. It’s probably OK for a short while, but you’re playing with fire.

If it’s a 2wd with manual tranny, just put it in neutral, self lubricating.

On any four-wheel-drive, if you put the transfer case in neutral, it isolates the transmission, and the front and rear differentials are self lubricating.

But!!! If YOU GUYS are getting your mechanical wisdom from ME, you’re in deep trouble....

But my 2 cents, hope it helps!

A manual transmission in neutral doesn't engage the countershaft so doesn't get any "splash" lubrication from the lower shaft turning, so will burn up rear output and synchros just as fast as an auto is ruined.

A manual transaxle is fine in neutral as the ring gear is splashing oil over all the expensive pieces.
