I have a 2020 Ford Ranger Super Cab XL 4x4 w/6' bed w/STX package, and 3.73 Electronic-locking differential. Ford shows the use of a Step Bumper ball and frame mount receiver. In bumper mount, you can't go over 3,500 lbs . Then they say if you don't have the factory Tow Package you can't use a frame mount hitch to tow over 3500 lbs. Is it because without Factory Tow Package you don't have the extra cooling capacities on engine oil/transmission ? But it looks like the transmission cooler is already there. Does the Tow Package at only around $400 add anything but frame mount receiver and wiring ? Your expert opinions are needed. Thanks for your help. Bob

Factory tow package is usually one set lower axle gears, and a rear sway bar, in my experience. Maybe an overload leaf. At least that's what it was in the 1990s. Dunno about the trans cooler, mine have had the radiator loop for the trans.

Check your owner's manual, if there are different rear end gear options it will show you in a table somewhere, along with load (tow) capacity, etc.

For what its worth, your rating is what it is.

You can add whatever you want and legally it changes nothing (side from the weight of whatever you add eating into your ratings)

All 19+ Rangers have the same 3.73 gearing.

Pretty worthless article with lots of magazine fluff..... but when you scroll through it, yeah, hitch and wiring harness. There ya go, one sentence fragment to answer the question ;) Which for $400 in a factory package, is about right. Too bad you can't get lower gears.......

The CGVWR on the door sticker is the final arbiter of what you can tow. Do they list a different number for the trucks with a factory hitch and wiring harness? I don't think that number can be changed later, so if you already bought the truck........

Here's 2021 from the Ford web site. If your CGVWR is a little over 12,000 pounds then slap a hitch on it, bob's yer uncle.

And 2020 appears to be exactly the same, per this Ford dealer:

7,500 no matter how you slice it. Dang, that's a lot for a 4 banger.....

Didn't have time to read the article, only had the 2 seconds it took to find it on Google lol.

It is quite a lot for a 4cyl, but this ain't your pappys 4cyl lol. The ten speed helps tremendously as well im sure. Time will tell how it holds up to dragging around an extra 7500 pounds

I have a 2019 Ranger with the Trailer Tow Package.

The package includes:
  • 4-pin/7-pin Wiring Harness
  • Class IV Trailer Hitch Receiver
  • a modified rear bumper center section that tucks the hitch up tight to the truck
No transmission cooler, no differential gear change, no break controller.

But the bumper modifications are pretty extensive. So the factory set-up looks so much nicer, FWIW. Aftermarket looks like a ruptured duck.

Also worth noting: The stock step bumper ball mount is supported by a structural tube sub-ass'y that is hidden behind the bumper. I was impressed by how beefy it is. I've posted some photo's below.

3.73’s just doesnt seem deep enough considering the tire size and it being a 4cyl. Granted I know nothing about the transmission ratios and it does have a lot of gears there.

It has more power than my 8 and twice as many gears...

It only sounds wrong if your thinking about old rangers.

2020 ranger has 310 foot pounds of torque and 10 speeds with a 4.69:1 first. Compare that with a 2011 ranger 4.0 v6 with 238 foot pounds and 5 speeds with a 2.47:1 first gear.

These turbo motors w/ the 10 spd are a pretty good combo. My f150 w/ a 3.5T and 10spd is rated to tow 12,800lbs.... it has 3.55 gears. The 2wd can tow 13,200 (or something like that).

Interesting, that Step Bumper support looks like the main part to a trailer hitch. Thanks for the pictures.

The bumper shares the mount with the hitch, they are not really connected. The bumper is atached to the hitch by the four bolts on the right side is all. The left outer bumper shell is removed and you can see the four holes with clip nuts in the left frame bracket. The right side with the bumper shell still has those four bolts installed.

The non-tow package bumper brackets just don't have the drop down for the hitch.
