Hello yall,

I have a 2001 3.0 ranger 4x4 with the manual transmission.

Just recently, I got ahold of a 2000 mountaineer w/113k a bad tranny.

I know I need an M5ODR2 from a 97-03 4.2 and a BW4406 TC. I am trying to source this now.

some questions I have for the swap:

What issues would i specifically run into with a 2001 ranger and 2000 mounty?

Can i send the PCM off to have pats removed and not worry about keys and steering columns? It would be awesome to use my ranger column and keys.

Would i need custom driveshafts? Or can i source some from expos and others from the pick and pull?

i've done a lot of homework, but there is a lot of variance between the years it seems.
Love the site and all the builds.
Thanks

Welcome to TRS :)

Yes, reads like a good plan

The V8 PCM will also need the automatic transmission software deleted, when its out for "tuning"

Some good articles here on Ranger V8 swaps: https://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/index-conversions.shtm

The 4WD system is separate, but does need Neutral sensing for 4Low which was done using clutch pedal switch
Your BW1354 uses the same shift motor as the BW4406 so should be plug and play

Speedometer will be an issue, but an add-on module would be easiest way to get around that
The 2001 Ranger used an OSS sensor on transmission for Speed sensor, it connected directly to PCM and then PCM converted signal to the 8,000PPM need for speedometer and cruise
The 2000 Mountaineer/Explorer used its 4WABS module for that conversion, Ranger 4WABS can't do that

But you can use an interface like this one: https://www.dakotadigital.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=1192/mode=prod/prd1192.htm
You splice into the 2 rear axle ABS sensor wires and run that signal into the cab to this interface
Rear ABS is about a 30,000ppm signal
This interface will convert it to 8,000ppm
ppm is pulse per mile
Its adjustable to fine tune for tire size, so speedometer will actually be more acurate than it was from the factory, lol

@RonD respectfully, I submit that my '01 4.0 4x4 does not use the trans/transfer case OSS sensor. It is on the rear axle. It is a fairly late build though.

Its possible, 1998-2000 Rangers used the rear axle ABS sensor and GEM module for the conversion, and GEM was 4WD controller
2001 was when Ford switched to OSS sensor on transmission, so yours could be early 2001
2001 Rangers 4x4s also got a stand-alone 4x4 controller, and Live axles, so no unlocking hubs
All Rangers 1988 and up(may have been earlier) have rear axle ABS sensor

This is what the OSS looks like on the manual trans 4WD, 2001 and up: https://www.ranger-forums.com/attac...s-connector-go-2003_manual_ext_housing_sm.jpg

And the computer did the 4Low conversion for speed as well, 2001 and up, so when in 4low the computer would do ratio change in its calculations so speedo would show correct speed

1998-2000 didn't need that because it used rear axle speed
1997 and older had speed sensor on the transfer case output shaft in a 4x4, not transmission

RonD, thanks so much. I tore out the transmission from the ranger the other day. I opened up the top and it was super clean inside. I guess the previous owner had it rebuilt, or bought a reman that was originally from another vehicle. All i could find is that the 1L54 DA was 2001-2008. I have the OSS, but a cool 90 degree.

Pretty neat to get the pulse from the ABS. Thanks for the interface link.

So i will not need to use the mountaineer steering column, key, etc. in the finished ranger?

Been awhile, getting back on it. There is a guy around these parts selling a transmission and TC but very little info on it.
can anyone tell what years round about this m5odr2 is from? And more importantly, would this setup work in my case? 2001 ranger 5speed 4x4, 2000 mountaineer 5.0.

Thanks

Doesn't look like its from/for a 302

See if seller has picture of bell housing from the front: https://bangshift.com/forum/filedata/fetch?id=1202195&d=1527126131

The top holes should be 5" apart, that one looks wider

Thanks,
He wont be in his shop until monday.
said it was for a small block ford. The TC is a BW1356? Not sure

He had these two other pics. For some reason thought it was better to take just a pic of the slave cylinder than the entire bellhousing...
He said it was for a bronco project

It does look like a BW1356 and they were used from 1987 to 1996 in full-size Ford trucks, and 302 was used those years, and "small block" is the correct designation for the 302 bolt patterm

In those years the M5OD-R2(M5R2) shifter will be farther forward(4" I think maybe 5") than the 1997-2003 M5R2, so you would need to bend the shifter arm to clear the dash

Long time but finally have a possible donor transmission.
It will need to be shipped, so all I'm seeing is pictures. The guy that selling it's a little older and not so handy with phones and cameras. He had on his post that it was it motor/tranny/TC from a 01 f150 with a 4.2.
While speaking with him on the phone he was positive it came out of a 91.

From what I looked up, Ford didn't even make the 4.2 V6 at 91. Can any of y'all tell from this pic if the motor/tranny/tc is from an 01?
the plastic intake manifold looks like the later 4.2 to me.

Id appreciate it. Thanks

Ok new pics of the motor/tranny from the guy.

This definitely looks like a 4.2 to me.
Some f150 page had thchart. Looks like the XL34 XC is indeed the tranny i need for my swap.

finally!

will i need the harness and fuse box from the mountaineer? Id imagine i will

Also, any good recommendations for where to send the PCM tuned?

Yes to the harness. If memory serves you're good on the fuse/relay box? But pull anything you think you might possibly need. You can always get rid of it later.
