My credo
I don't subscribe to causes that are compelled by irrational fears.
Hey everyone, I am trying to research replacing the motor mounts on my 2002; I believe one or both have failed; the truck exhibits drivetrain shutter when coming to a stop or launching from, and attempts to lurch forward whenever the AC compressor turns on. I've done some homework on this already and found someone who walked through doing this on a 2001, which involved largely disassembling the front suspension in order to access the mount holes, but I'm not sure this is the same procedure for a 2002 as to my understanding, the mounts were relocated slightly after Ford spun the Explorer off to it's own separate platform.

Is the procedure for replacing the motor mounts on a 2002 Ranger the same as for earlier models? If it is different, is there a forum post or some other guide that I can use to help me do this job? You guys here have been helpful so far, so thanks in advance for any help I can get here.

Its not egg nog. Put it on jackstands to the chassis in case you do need to remove front suspension or drivetrain, but could probably get away without that using a bottle jack and pry bar to manipulate the motor out of the for each one. Loosening the transmission mount also helps. Bonsai!

It's not 'egg nog?'

I get your point; but you've double-negative'd this. It's not egg nog = it's not not rocket science = it is rocket science. Just note, I'm trying to confirm whether or not the procedure is different after 2001; it's gotta be done either way so I'm trying to figure out if I have to do this job the way you're describing or if there was a change and the process is different; I'm not concerned as much about whether or not the job is hard. I haven't crawled under for a look yet, and my Haynes manual once again proved to be of no help; it doesn't outline how to do the job at all, for any configuration.

Guilty as charged. I understand, just trying to help, despite not having an exact answer (I've done a lot of motor mount swaps). There may be a youtube video on this specific years procedure if you haven't searched already.

I appreciate it regardless. I did do the youtube thing which is where I found the breakdown of someone doing it on an 01, and he went pretty far to explicitly exclude later models when describing and showing the procedure. That's what lead me to follow up here. I've only had to do motor mounts once on a vehicle before, but it was FWD and didn't require putting the vehicle on a lift or stands. I'll keep in mind loosening the transmission mount though, I need to check it anyway to make sure the bad motor mount hasn't caused the trans mount to wear out too.
