2000 5.0 Explorer Swap Into 98 Ranger 4.0

Man I would love to have a set of torque monster headers for my truck but I do not want to spend the money on the new ones lol. Wish I could find some used ones.

Wow,thank you. I really appreciate it.

I called Bob today over at tmh and he is selling the gaskets, nuts, bolts, egr pipe, and headers for around 950 shipped. He told me with my setup I should see around 22-24 mpg, and 25+hp 35+ tq
with them. It is awfully tempting. I would pay for the headers in a couple of years in fuel savings.

I am just starting the same swap as we speak! 2000 3.0 4x4 Ranger. It’s getting the 5.0 and awd t case of of a 2000 Mountaineer. I will be switching to a manual t case at some point. Is anything different being mine is a 3.0 auto truck as opposed to doing this in a 4.0 truck? Both my. Ranger an donor have pats both are also the same year. I have the donor truck complete. Thought it was a better idea than getting a motor from a junk yard

You will have it easier with pats. Everything should be the same. I have pretty much everything in my write up. Feel free to ask any questions in the future.

Am I going to get in over my head with this? I have the explorer motor ready to lift out. Just have to disconnect the fuel lines. I will be starting on the ranger tomorrow I’m hoping that will have a little more room being it’s a 3.0. Is there any wiring I have to save off of the engine harness for the 3.0?

Whether your getting in over your head all depends on your ability.
I suggest saving everything from both trucks until your project is finished, it’s easier to throw stuff away later than spend time & $$ searching for a part you’ve already thrown away!

Have you checked this out?

Probably the biggest project I’ve ever done is rebuilt a 6.0 powerstroke. Pulled the cab and all that. The explorer motor is ready to come out. Took me about 4 hours. But I was pulling the bumpers and other stuff that I may save. The only thing I can see having a problem with is vac lines. But our space vehicle here is a 98 Mountaineer so I guess I can always refer to that.

Put a piece of masking tape on each of the vacuum lines and write on it with a permanent marker where it goes and you should be fine.

I will do that. The engine harness seems pretty easy.

Pull the computer and wiring harness off the explorer and set on the top of the engine. I used nothing of my 4.0 on the 5.0. I left everything connected on the 5.0 including the battery harness. All the vacuum lines connect back to the same type of fittings. If you need any help with the routing I will take pictures and post them. The fuel line connect right back to the factory ranger fuel line. As for the little bit of wiring for the a/c and solenoid wire. It is in my write up in the how to tech section or on the first page of this thread. You will not be left hanging. Just ask and we will provide as much advice as possible. By the way the torsion bar rangers have a lot more room between the fender wheels. I installed the exhaust bolts on the passenger side with a ratchet wrench and had tons of room. Headers are going to be pretty easy when I go to install them. The clearance in the wheel wells in the explorer is terrible compared to our 4x4 rangers. Buy the way this is how I pulled the motor and trans out of my donor. :headbang:

Did you reuse your cats and 5.0 exhaust? I’m thinking about getting ride of the egr while the motor is out and just chipping it. My goal is to have it look like it left the factory with the v8. Did you use the 4.0 fuel pump?
