Ignition Timing need help

Ok so ive never put a distibutor in. From what i found. I set the rotor on the distributor just ahead of spark #1 so that when i drop it in to the block itll fall right on spark #1. Hste o say it but thats all i got. New to doing this. Need some detailed help.

You also need to make sure your crank in on TDC of the exhaust stroke. You can find it by pulling number one spark plug and cranking the engine over with a rag over the spark plug hole. As soon as the rag blows off, stop cranking and turn the crack back to TDC. This will get you on the compression stroke.

You need to time a distributor to the Cam, distributor and cam turn at 1/2 the speed of the crankshaft.

The TDC(top dead center) mark for the Crankshaft just tells you the piston for #1 cylinder is at the top of that cylinder, but not where the Cam is, you need that info.

Remove 1 spark plug from #1 cylinder and turn crankshaft until you feel air being pushed out, alot of air because both valves are closed, continue to rotate crank until it is at the TDC mark, Compression/power stroke TDC, when #1 spark plug is suppose to fire.
Now you are ready to install distributor as you described above.
