Hello, new to the forums here, signed up to maybe provide some info on something.

From the research I have done, an R8 axle code on the door sticker indicates a gear ratio of 4.56. However, there are a few places that state the R8 simply means its a 4.10 with a Torsen LSD.

Many people I have seen have also said that R8 axles simply don't exist, either due to the 4.56 gears not coming from the factory or not at all.

So here is a picture to prove they at least exist: https://www.dropbox.com/s/jhvohs1o86ws7cr/IMAG0368.jpg

From a 2009 Ranger FX4 Off Road from Canada. I have not taken off the differential plate to see if it truly has the Torsen, but it absolutely is a 31 spline and 4.10 gears. Hopefully this helps some people with information.

My book says R8 is a 4.10 8.8, limited slip, 3600 GVW.

Yes, I have seen much fewer places that distinguish it as such on forums. Most the "charts" say 4.56. I think it might be true that R8 is, at least usually, a 4.10, not the mythical 4.56 which I don't think anyone has ever seen before on a stock truck.

Thanks for the input! Hoping this will clarify some information about the Ranger.

What book are you using?

Ford shop manuals I would be guessing, same as myself as we are Ford techs.

Here is what is listed for the 09 ranger

The following lists the gear ratios on axles.

  • 86 — 3.73 non-limited slip (7.5 inch)
  • 87 — 4.10 non-limited slip (7.5 inch)
  • 95 — 3.55 non-limited slip (8.8 inch)
  • 96 — 3.73 non-limited slip (8.8 inch)
  • 97 — 4.10 non-limited slip (8.8 inch)
  • R5 — 3.55 limited slip (8.8 inch)
  • R6 — 3.73 limited slip (8.8 inch)
  • R7 — 4.10 limited slip (8.8 inch) — 2,750 lb GVW
  • R8— 4.10 limited slip (8.8 inch) — 3,600 lb GVW

I wonder where the thought of the 4.56 gears came from. Unless it is something specially Canadian or something extremely rare... (Edit: Didn't notice you were from BC).

I guess till someone else comes along with proof otherwise, the R8 certainly is a 4.10, not a 4.56, at this point. Hopefully the people who made the charts can find this thread eventually.

Its not a Canadian thing, I just posted the table out of the 09 shop manual.

Also the R8 axle code is only listed for 08/09 model years.

This is an 09' Ranger, so that works at least. I think maybe it has more to do with the diff having a Torsen LSD than anything to do with the gear ratio?

Torsen and 31 spline shafts/larger axle bearings (hence the higher GVW)

Exactly my point, it says R8 is a

L/S 8.8"

4.56

Which this is absolutely not. Its an R8, but it has 4.10 gears, not 4.56. I think there is where the confusion stems from. People say the 4.56s don't exist (stock from dealer), and in conjunction, the R8 doesn't. At least one certainly does.
