I been thinking of doing a 4.0 swap I currently have a 94 3.0 automatic and was wondering what is needed from the donor car and what's the newest 4.0 I could possibly put into it or for the money is it just cheaper doing a 5.0 ?

You'll need atleast an engine, trans, ECU, engine wiring harness, exhaust from a donor vehicle for any engine swap 4.0 OHV, 4.0 SOHC, 5.0, 2.3T, etc.

Since your truck is a 94, is it OBD1 or OBD2? If it's OBD1, then switching to a newer engine/ECU would require basically rewiring the entire truck. If it's OBD2 you'd have more options, and newer options.

This^^^

For the money and effort it will be, I'd do a 5.0

I been looking 5.0 look like the best best and you get more power then the 4.0 swap but would I need to upgrade the rear end

I truly don't believe 7.5 in. rear ends are nearly as weak as some believe. For an Explorer 5.0 swap I'd have no qualms using a 7.5 out back, unless you're turning some monster tires or very sticky tires.

Only if you ignore the fact that stock for stock the 4.0 and 5.0 have almost identical power curves under 3200 RPM.
