5.4L V8 swap

Will the 5.4L s/c Ford engine fit in the engine bay of a 1998-2004 ford ranger. Also what will need to be modified if it does. If the motor doesn't fit what V8 would you recommend.
 
It would be tight but it probably would fit. Can't say as I have seen one done but the 4v 4.6 is pretty snug, not sure how they compare sizewise.

Most people opt for the nearly bolt/plug in Explorer 5.0.
 
im also considering doing A 4.6 swap thats been bored and stroked to 333 cubics inches with is rough 5.4L. Im also considering doing a supercharger on top of the worked over engine.

I'd actually be pretty tempted to say it probably will not without some hood modification. The 5.4 L is 2" taller than the 4.6, and make that about 4-5 with the M112. It would be an incredibly tough squeeze.
You're talking about something bigger than a Triton, but a Lightning V8. You're also dealing with the 4R100 (modified diesel) trans, which is going to take a pretty substantial modification of your floorpan.

This is a common arguement with the Vic crowd, the 5.4 has more low end torque then the 4.6 BUT its longer stroke means it can not rev as high.

The 4.6 is a much better canidate for a ranger as it is an almost bolt in swap despite what some on here say.

Alot of the people that do the 5.4 swap in vic's are not very impressed with the results.

A built 4.6 with good flowing heads and a few other mods will out preform a stock 5.4 and have much better driveability in a light weight vehicle like a ranger.
 
A 2v 5.4 is pretty darn spunky in my 7' tall 4x4 F-150 that has almost a ton on my Ranger :icon_confused:

In a drag race it would be a battle of the ages against my 5.0 Ranger, I wouldn't want to live on the difference.

There is not a whole lot of size difference between the two, or cost. If you are going to give one better heads give the other one the same and then compare. Lightnings and Shelbys don't seem all that scared of RPM.

Common answer is yes it will fit - how much tme, money and experience/skills do you have? The 4.6 swap is getting to be done more and more but still not all that easy. Like 85_Ranger says, the 5.0 Explorer motor is so close to being a drop in swap The '04' Mustang Cobra put out 380 HP with it's DOHC motor. Bet it would cost a lot less to reach that with the 5.0. Ought to check what a cam change costs on just a SOHC 4.6. Don't get me wrong, love the new mod motors, love to have a 3-v 4.6 in mine but it'd have to be SC'd to get the full benifit.

Cam change isn't that expensive. MMR will degree a cam for anyone who is lazy and the kit to change the cams is only $80 and can be rented. The 4.6L will fit pretty easily in the engine bay the 5.4L will as well, but the deck height and stock intakes are taller. The 5.4L DOHC has been done which is taller and wider than both. The thing for any of the mod motors is getting heads that flow. Trickflow heads cost money, but they embarass all other heads for flow (based off the old 427 SOHC motors you know the ones banned from nascar).

302 dimensions w/ carb
height: 27" length: 29" width: 22" wide

4.6L SOHC Mustang Intake (500lbs)
height: 26" length: 23 5/8" width:

5.4L SOHC F-Series Intake (525lbs)
height: 28" length: 23 5/8" width: 27"

4.6L DOHC Cobra Intake (425lbs)
height: 27 1/8" length: 23 5/8" width: 26 5/8"

4.6L DOHC Sullivan Intake (425lbs)
height: 27 3/4" length: 23 5/8" width: 26 5/8"

5.4L DOHC Navigator Intake (540lbs)
height: 35 1/2" length: 23 5/8" width: 28 1/4"

6.8L SOHC V-10 Van Intake (640lbs)

Looking at those dimensions I would say f it and but a 6.8 in there!!!
