1988 BII Build

you need to turn that steering bolt over, it's best to have it pointing down, that way of some freak thing happen and the nut came off, the bolt would still be there.

If you was building a plane and the inspector saw that, he would fail the plane till you fixed it.

At the knuckle, take the missalignment spacers out, no need for them and the extra stress on the bolts. I run no spacers, 3/4" bolts no double shear.

Just my .02 cents.

Kyle's got a good point. As for the bolt head rubbing, that's because you still have the stockers on there. With a proper 15x8 with 3.5" backspacing, you'll have no clearance problems.

yep, that's the plan. i think i'd have a lot of play in the steering if i left the misaligns in as well.

i'd like to run the stockers. i like the way lifted trucks look with bigger tires and stock wheels for some reason. but i figured that new wheels would help.

the owner of MarsFab Off-road is gonna give me a set of stock XJ coils to see if that'll get me the lift heigh i need. gonna pick them up next thursday on the way to ATL. guess i'll just hang on to the 4.5" ones since I will be going taller one day.

they build some pretty cool stuff: http://www.marsfab.com/

well, no pics. but today i drilled out the knuckles to 3/4". couldnt make it to Ace before they closed though, so i'll have to get the bolts after work tomorrow.

started hacking on the cross member as well. then i pulled out the track bar so i could adjust the heim again. needs to be shorter.

test fit the new heim last night

there's maybe a 1/16" of an inch of clearance between the wheel and the washer. i think i'm gonna have to end up getting new wheels damnit. that or i was thinking i could buy a 5/8" washer and drill it out to 3/4"

I would pick up some nylock nuts for all your steering bolts. I helped a guy put together a steering for his Jeep he brought his own bolts didn't use nylocks. His steering came loose twice on the highway in the first 4 mos. I told him to get nylocks cheap insurance. The Rock Ranger, TNT, My TJ, and Merc all have nylocks and never come loose. And I run the bolts upside down for clearance of my rims. Plus normally the head of a bolt breaks (when they break) so it really doesn't matter which way you put the bolt in you could be screwed either way if something happens. 23k miles on the Merc bolts all of them upside down never an issue and if you seen the pics and vids you know I wheel my trucks hard.

i saw the nylon bolts at Ace yesterday and thought about it. i was thinking i'd just red loctite the crap out of them lol

i'm also thinking i'll cut off the mount on the tie rod and run a 3/4" bolt for the drag link to bolt to. since i had to buy a 3/4" drill bit anyhow

Well with nylock you can take it apart and put it back together and not have to worry about loctite every time you have to do maintenance on the axle . I like how you did the drag link to the tie rod I would try it that way and if you think it sucks then then switch. :icon_cheers:

yeah, maybe i'll run it for a bit then switch. see how it handles before i go cutting stuff off it.

i gotta start saving for new wheels now. i dont wanna risk driving it on the road with the bolts that close to the wheel

I know advance auto sells 5/16" spacers. That might give you just enough room to squeek by.

for heims?

oh and on a side note, i've decided to keep the 4.5" coils and just raise the back. that way i can easily clear the 33's once i get them
