Less than 3.08 ratio?

I have a custom project that I'm going to use a ford 7-1/2" or 6-7/8" rear end.

I'm looking to find a gear set with a ratio somewhere in the 2.50'ish range.

Has anyone heard of or know of a aftermarket company that has something like this available or could rig something up? It doesn't have to be L/S, open diff is just fine.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

well if you were going with an 8.8 I'd say yes. But I'm not sure about the 7 1/2, might want to check out older mustangs and see what they had available.

Some of the early Fords, late 60's came with 2.70-2.80 gears in the 8". Even some with the 9" came with a 2.75 gear. Have to try someone like Richmond gear for anything higher in those other rear ends.

I know old cars had them before overdrive transmissions came out to get halfway respectable milage, aside from that I would have no idea.

7.5&8.8 fox mustangs also had 2.73's and some lower. fox from '79 to '84 all had 7.5, '85+ v8's had 8.8, 4and 6cyl had 7.5. hope it helps. even new mustang v6 still has 7.5, v8 has 8.8

It was the 86 and newer GT's had a 8.8, the 85 GT's still had the 7.5.

Is the mustang 7-1/2" axle the same as in the rangers? If so, i could swap a gear set from the stang into the ranger rear end, right?

For those of you that are curious, i'm building a trike that utilizes a quad motor for power. I need a nice and simple leaf sprung rear end that is decently small, the ford ranger rear end is the best I could come up with that met that criteria. I just need to get the rear end to a lower ratio for a more respectable top speed.

A 2.73 would be about right, but i would be nice to go a bit lower. I'll contact Richmond gear to see what they can have.

I know the 7-1/2" is not the most popular, but I'm trying to keep the weight down. A 8 or 9" would be much to big.

You are on the right track.
A Ford 7.5" axle is 130 pounds, a 8" is 160 pounds and a 9" is 205 pounds (all weights are without brakes).
Don't have weight for a Ford 6-3/4" axle.

mustangii.org has a tag decoder list that shows for 1977 that axle code WGF-AJ was a 6-3/4" with 2.73:1 gears. You might be able to put those gears in a 83-84? Ranger 6-3/4" case. Good luck finding these parts these days.

The 7.5 axle is much more common. As far as I know, Mustang / T'Bird / Cougar / fairmont 7.5" gears fit into a Ranger 7.5" case with no problems. My guess is that a Fairmont or a mid-1980s V6 T'Bird or Cougar would be the best place to look for a 2.73 or lower gear set.

drivetrain.com has a good listing of all the Fords that used the 7.5" axle.

with autos, most did and even some manuals, but '85 did have 8.8's. also, '85 auto cars were fuel injected(stock 180hp), standard were carbed(210hp stock).... i know, because i have an '85 gt carbed with 8.8!!!!!!!!!! also, '85 was the first year for quadra shocks, only on 8.8!!!! which i also have!!!! i have 4 mustangs, i know what each one has!

somebody swapped yours, casue 85's have 7.5's. and i wouldnt be buying a 2.73 gear for a whole lot. they are everywhere used. i think i actually have a couple sets for low $$

no, they didnt. ive known the original owner, then it was my uncles, they came STOCK with 8.8's..... do a little research, but a lot of places will only tell you that they had 7.5's because most of them did!!!!! i know for a fact that the '85 had the 8.8 as an option!!!!
