Less than 3.08 ratio?

AHH option...you didnt say that till now. id believe that

glad you agreed, i was getting frustrated!:shout:

'85 to '86 are a strange breed, lots of changes that not a lot of people are familiar with. late 85's had some stuff 86's had. like the fuel injected motor with auto transmission. when you ask most people say it wasnt fuel injected until '86. sound like you know your stuff bottled, but with out actually owning an 85 you probably never would have known than.

ive owned an 85,86,87,89,90,92,94,and some of thema couple times over. i jsut didnt get one of the few with the option apparently. ive never seen one with an 8.8, but people do swap them all the damn time

oh i know they swap em, but its stock! i have a pic somewhere of when i first got it, in horrible shape underneith. had original quad shocks and everything. matching axle codes on doors and tag.

with autos, most did and even some manuals, but '85 did have 8.8's. also, '85 auto cars were fuel injected(stock 180hp), standard were carbed(210hp stock).... i know, because i have an '85 gt carbed with 8.8!!!!!!!!!!:headbang: also, '85 was the first year for quadra shocks, only on 8.8!!!! which i also have!!!! i have 4 mustangs, i know what each one has!

Wrong again!!

I have in my possession right now an 85 GT that I have had for the last 17 years. The 8.8 did not come out until 86! The quad shocks were used on the late 83 GT models and up! If your 85 has an 8.8 the person before you changed it out, as it was a 7.5 from the factory!
Here is some reading for you guys
http://www.mustanggt.org/84gt.htm
Make sure you read the 3 paragraph of the 84, and the 2 paragraph of the 86

i will actually second him on this, i had a all original 85 GT i traded a quad for, car had 80k miles and was 100% original, right down to the sprak plugs, i had the carbed HO 302, a t5, and a 8.8 in the rear from the factory

oh ya, almost forgot, the build sheet was in tact aswell in which it listed a 8.8 w/3.73's

The 8.8 was never installed in a V8 Mustang from the factory with 3.73's. :bsflag:
The only options for the 7.5 and the 8.8 were the 2.73 and 3.08 for the standards and the 3.27 for the auto's. Again if it had an 8.8 someone put it in as an upgrade.

yeah there werent any 3.73 stock gears

it had 3.73's they may not have been "standard" but they were on the build sheet along with a few other goodies i didnt see on many other 85's

but anyways, this thread has been jacked, let the original poster get it back

Thanks for all the posts, greatly appreciated. Everyone has good info, it never hurts to get smart on other topics either.

I will hunt some more but looking at ford cars with the 7-1/2's (vs the rangers) and see if i can drum up any lower ratio, i'll keep you guys posted.

Ah, the 6-3/4". I've heard of them before, but after going to the junk yard this morning, I could only find 7-1/2's. I figured it would be nice to find a 6-3/4", but I've never seen one before.
What year was the 6-3/4" used? How rare are they?

I may stick to the 7-1/2" because it is easy to get a hold of, and may perhaps have more ratio options.

Thanks kindly,
-mark

He's had it the whole time.....was just getting wrong information.

sorry, your wrong! they(some) came with 8.8's. because you dont have one with and 8.8 doesnt mean they dont exsist! so, i must have shit out the build sheet on my car, and stamped my own axle tag to match. and mine had the 3.08's. also the gt registry must be wrong.. and the fox body interchange manual, and fomoco's records are all made up.

Post some pics and I'll decode it.

Not surprised you did not see any 6-3/4" axles in your junkyard search, Unclejemima.

As far as I know the 6-3/4" axle was only used in 83 and 84 Rangers and then only with the 2.0L four cylinder motor, not the 2.3L four. The 6-3/4" was more common in the Mustang II (74 to 78), but those would be four lug axles, not five lug like the Ranger version of the 6-3/4".

My guess is that a lot of the Fords that came with the 6-3/4" axle have already gone to the crusher / shredder and have been recycled into Hondas and Kias.

That is all I think i know.
