How would one distinguish an FX4 4L10 31-spline from a factory 4L10 28-spline?

3.25" axle tube diameter.
28 spline 8.8" has 3" tubes that taper to 2.75" at the leaf spring perch ('10 & '11 models excepted).

Not until within 1-2" of the brake drum backing plate.
