The Lone Ranger – Kage’s ’94 X-Cab Leaf SAS and Bed Bob

Crawl Box Upgrade

After killing the 1350 crawl box on our trip (rear T-case loosened up because I forgot to lock-tite the bolt, guess I shouldn't drink while wrenching), I needed to get something fixed quickly.

When the rear t-case came out of alignment, it put enough side load on the crawl box shift forks to kill the nylon that was there, and gave it some metal on metal contact. Eventually killing the fork and letting the box come out of gear:

So I looked at some diagrams and it looked like the 1354 electric shift fork might work in its place (the 1350-1354 guts are all interchangeable, so long as you swap everything). With nothing to lose at this point, I tore into the electric 1354 I had to see what’s what. And much to my surprise, the Electric junk will work just fine. So this is an easy to find upgrade for you folks running doublers as the electric 1354’s are everywhere.

1354 Electric case stuff on the Right, destroyed manual 1350 stuff on the left:

The big bonus of the upgrade is that you get go to from a 4 planetary gear set to 6. Not that I expected to destroy the 4 gear set, but hey, why not upgrade?:

Everything mocked up, it all looks like it’ll play happy together:

Now I just need to clean up everything, reseal the cases and life will be good again (I hope).

So at this point, I just need to get everything cleaned up, and put back together and I can then start working on the other issues. Wohlf, I'd still like to have that 1350 that you've got just in case I managed to destroy the 1350 case one day.

I do need one shift levers badly (and the other shift linkage that goes withi it would be swell too):

If anyone has one laying around, please let me know. Otherwise I'll be shifting the 1354 by hand for a bit until I can find what I need in the bone yard (or make one up)

Are you talking about the little bolts that go inside or the bolts that hold the adapter plate to the rear case?

The bolts that hold the adapter plate to the rear case. All of the small bolts were still tight as the day I put them in, though I didn't use lock-tite on those bolts either (But they were coverd in grey RTV).

Also, the bolts that hold the adapter plate to the 1350 case were still tight too.

why does your last pic posted have an ad on it?????

no, it shows fine. its just an ad at the bottom. look at the last pics i uploaded on my build. it shows a share and a zoom feature now... and there are ads. its photobucket selling ad space on our pics now... i guess b/c we don't use their "paid" service. lol oh well

Not seeing it a all on my end. Either way, I've got way to many photos to move from photo bucket to something else at this point, and the hell if I'm paying them money for the marginal service they offer :icon_twisted:

Don't care who you are, that's funny... Here's the targeted audience to sell GM to!
(pic removed for space)
Interesting, I haven't seen that at all on this site???

seems like its not just photobucket, but the web site. even linked photos are coming up with adds.

Lame.

I got more stuff knocked out today. Ball joints are done (what a pain in the butt with the high steer arms). Doubler is assembled and waiting to be put back into the truck. I need to figure out how the heck I'm giong to shift that rear case before I put it back in there as its a whole lot tighter than I though it was going to be (Off to search for old thread on that one).

Its looking pretty likely that it'll be back on the road this week, assuming the tranny isn't really fuggered after all :icon_twisted:

It took awhile, but here’s the photos from my brake issues. It looks like the caliper bracket that mounts behind the spindle is either worn out, or has managed to spread apart over time. This extra distance gave me some slop in the mating parts:
DangBrakes003.jpg

That slop would allow the retainer key to work its way out from its home:
DangBrakes004.jpg

When that would happen, the key would get beat against the outer portion of the rim and get ejected. This would allow the caliper to start to come out of its home:
DangBrakes001.jpg

So the solution I came up with in Bozeman MT was to get a piece of steel from the fencing section and jam it in there to take up the slack. It looks hacked, but it worked quite well:
DangBrakes002.jpg

When I got home, I pulled everything apart and confirmed my suspicions that there was something up with the bracket itself. It turns out that the upper tang is a bit more narrow than the other side:
DangBrakes005.jpg

I scrounged around my parts pile and grabbed a combo that seems to fit tighter (Still more loose than I’d like it too) so hopefully that problem has been taken care of. If not, I’ll need to do some junk yard hoping to see if I can find some tighter fitting parts.

In other news, the Truck moved again for the first time last night. I still need to rig up the linkage for the rear case, but otherwise all is well.

Hey Kage my 78 dana 44 actually has a piece that fits where you put that spacer. I will take a pic of mine. It acts kinda like a spring against the block to make everything tight. If you dont have one on the other side I have no idea how its not goin crazy on the other side. I lost one for my passenger side and drove for a while and it would make a hell of a pop.
Heres the link to the part on advance auto site. Hope it works.

Yup, the link worked. That gap is with the spring in place :icon_surprised: So I'm pretty sure something is just opened up a bit more than it should be (Or wore out). For now, its staying put so I'm ignoring that issue in favor of other pain in the butt projects.

Like linkage for the rear manual 1354 case in my doubler setup. I've been fighting with it for the past day, and just now figured out how to get it done (so simply I feel like a retard for not doing it in the first place). I'll post that up once I have the finished product in place.

In other news, it looks like I'm in the running for the Off Road Truck Of the Month (Link). Feel Free to give me some love if you want :icon_thumby:
