ranger refit/build thread

That thing would be fun in a field, but I don't think it would work too good when crawling on rocks, or I could be wrong, I never have gone rock crawling.

Robert

Rocks are another place you'd have to worry about throwing track, although you'd be able to get back on track much easier than in soft clay. Twisting the track is the easiest way to throw it, followed by sliding. If you're playing on the rocks you're almost guaranteed to twist the track. Sliding usually happens in softer soil conditions when you try to turn.

Sorry about the thread jack tom...

i didn't remember that part at all, but it makes sense...

i thought there was an ambulance that Tom had crawled on top of, that had a donor 460 for the ranger... the wheelie wagon has a 460 also? i thought it was more in the neighborhood of a 302

a bit of clarification...the old 460 in the ranger cracked-the engine from the ambulance is going in it now.

the wheelie machine has a 460 as well.if i scrap that rig,it's drivetrain will find it's way into a future project.still not sure what's going to happen there, there's people here that want it to stay together.

I remember the rangers engine cracked because someone didn't put antifreeze in it :annoyed:, I thought the engine from the red and white meat wagon was going in it, but I don't remember much after that.

Robert
that's right.
Sorry about the thread jack tom...

no worries,it's good info you've got going on there:icon_thumby:

If it's starting to get cold there, MAKE sure there is Antifreeze in all the engines :)

Robert

CHKNFKR Thanks for the info.

My original post was mainly wondering why Tom hadn't done one as an exercise/experiment, rather than a practical vehicle.

ya,ya.

460s are cheap and plentiful anyway.
CHKNFKR Thanks for the info.

i've been wanting to do that for a long, long time.

the first design i put to paper was almost 30 years ago...but i've never got around to building one.

BUILD IT BUILD IT BUILD IT BUILD IT BUILD IT BUILD IT BUILD IT!!!!!!

as much as i have said i want to see just one project done, i REALLY want to see tom build a freaking tank! :D

They're not really practical on anything under 30T and even then there are much better options these days.

practical, better, reliable, efficent, these words are NOT > EPIC!!!!!!!! :D

:O TOM!!!!!! you should build a track version of the plassan sand cat!!!

i've been doing some work on the frame, trying to get it ready for paint.i wasn't happy with the area around the winch tray and steering box,so some time was spent cleaning this stuff up.

where the steering box bolts up was boxed in,and there was some sloppy looking work on the winch tray.

there was a lot of cleanup on the trac-bar bracket as well.

while the front cab mounts were in good shape, the rear ones were rusted to the point that there was nothing left to sit the body mount on.these were fixed up with some new metal.

in other news, the a-frame was cut off the old tied-together d50,which was promptly loaded up and hauled to the dump.
now,the a-frame has to be fitted to the d60,as well as all the other goodies to make it all work.

the wheels were all given a coat of basic black urethane over an epoxy primer.hopefully this will keep the rust at bay for a little while.

i've bucked the ends off the rear in preparation for widening, and have the axle tubes cut off a donor sterling to weld on.i have to at least get this thing back onto it's wheels before winter sets in,it's a pain having it spread all over the yard.

i had a problem in this project with having to move a bunch of heavy things around.the problem was solved by chaining the engine hoist into the back of the explorer.it only took a few minutes to do,and allows me to pick up and easilly move up to about 1000lbs.
i see a more permanent folding version of this idea being built into this rig, when not in use it would be folded flat to the floor.it's also very handy for moving outboard motors around and setting them on boats.
