ranger refit/build thread

I was watching Top Gear the other night and seeing this.........

made me drool in anticipation of Doc's latest jaw-dropping frankenstein coming to life in his remote west coast island laboratory hide-out......
cool...might have to pay a bit more attention to the tv.
I would love to have a Jag V12 to install in my ranger.

Dang it

oh,there's no way that could be done:D

what happened to the wheelie wagon to become a donor vehicle? last i remember it was getting a fancy independent rear brake steering deal... :(

I have a hammer, a welder, and a great imagination, if I had the engine, I could get it in there, I might have to do what "Trucks" did and make some customs fenders, and stretch the front end, but I could get it to work. :icon_idea:

Or, I could take a page from your book and put it in the back :icon_thumby:

Remember the block is cracked in the ranger? I think that's where the Wheelie Wagon engine ended up.

Does the other projects have build threads ????

I would love to look at some more of his work.

i'm still unsure of what to do with the wheelie machine.it's just in very rough shape, and i don't have time to fix it up.

look at the bottom of this post.

i didn't remember that part at all, but it makes sense...

i thought there was an ambulance that Tom had crawled on top of, that had a donor 460 for the ranger... the wheelie wagon has a 460 also? i thought it was more in the neighborhood of a 302

I remember the rangers engine cracked because someone didn't put antifreeze in it :annoyed:, I thought the engine from the red and white meat wagon was going in it, but I don't remember much after that.

I never knew there was a wheelie wagon, I would have loved to see that.

I do have a friend here in TN. that says he can weld up a cracked block, says when he was young, and right out of WWII, he got a job welding and had to weld a lot of cast iron stuff, he even told me a story about when he worked for NASA as a welder on the first ships to go in to space. OH by the by, he's 84 and gets around better then I do at 44.

it totally can be done, if the crack doesn't go through the cylinder wall, and if it doesn't breach antifreeze AND oil passages it can be welded up quite easily (relatively) if it breaches oil and water, it's MUCH more difficult, and if it goes into the cylinder, it's virtually impossible without re-sleeving the block

I can't believe he hasn't built anything with tank tracks yet.

They're not really practical on anything under 30T and even then there are much better options these days.

I stand by what i said. I say that because of the experience i've had with tracks. Have you ever thrown track while mired in clay? Its a bitch. Ever blown your final drive 100 miles from nowhere? A 4x4 can limp home on just its front axle, a track can't. You think wheels and tires are expensive? On a track, we'll use your ripsaw, you have a drive sprocket on each track, you have 6 road wheels on each track, and you have a tensioner wheel on each track, plus the track itself. The suspension is higher maintenance, more costly as well simply because there is more of it.

Not knocking that thing cuz it does look fun as hell, i still just don't see it doing anything a wheeled vehicle can't do just as well and with a lot less headache and maintenance, not to mention coin.
