i could be mistaken but im pretty sure rangersvt just got rid of a sterling because the shafts have a neck down in them and you cant narrow them. im looking through his thread now to see if im wrong lol
that's the thing-you don't want to actually modify the axle shaft.that would mean cutting splines in the end,which are nowhere near as strong as the rolled splines from the factory.
the sterling has one shaft that is 3 1/4 or 3 3/4'' longer than the other(it's been a while-i don't remember which it is)so if you ditch the long shaft and replace it with another short shaft,modifying the housing to suit,you get it narrower with unmodified shafts.
by the way-i checked on some spare shafts i have here.you can get away with cutting .325'' off each shaft's end,to pick up another 5/8''or so total.
