i could be mistaken but im pretty sure rangersvt just got rid of a sterling because the shafts have a neck down in them and you cant narrow them. im looking through his thread now to see if im wrong lol

that's the thing-you don't want to actually modify the axle shaft.that would mean cutting splines in the end,which are nowhere near as strong as the rolled splines from the factory.
the sterling has one shaft that is 3 1/4 or 3 3/4'' longer than the other(it's been a while-i don't remember which it is)so if you ditch the long shaft and replace it with another short shaft,modifying the housing to suit,you get it narrower with unmodified shafts.

by the way-i checked on some spare shafts i have here.you can get away with cutting .325'' off each shaft's end,to pick up another 5/8''or so total.

any wrecker in your area should have a bunch...remember,the 2wd trucks had them too...not that there's too many 2wd's in the area.

They got 3 wrecked logging crummys in. All 3 60's sold within a couple days.

I doubt anyone took the sterlings tho, I'll have to give them a shout.

not much...with the wider axle,i'll probably use a longer spring in the front.the wider apart the ends of the spring are,the more stable it is.and i'm still debating whether to widen out the rear-if i do i'll lengthen out that spring too.

otherwise,i'm really happy with the way it all works so i don't want to mess around with it too much.

so i just got back from sandblasting,eveything looks really good but i have to get some primer on it right away because i'm seeing a light rust color forming on it already.

i would have got some pics of the blasting,but i forgot to bring the camera.

you need to have it epoxy primer, reg primer won't stop rust.

Are these the new frame rails that bought and took all apart??? because the old frame has stress cracks in it ???

I sat here looking at the picture after my post, and for some strange reason, I pictured the red and white boat on the Ranger frame and all done up.

thanks,guys.there's a long way to go,but at least it's heading in the right direction.

i got some epoxy primer on the bare metal so it's got some protection.after finishing the metalwork on the frame,it'll get urethane primer as a base for the topcoat,which will be a single stage urethane in gloss black.
should look pretty good,and hopefully the salt air here won't get a bite on it too soon.

that is epoxy on it.
soaks into the blasted metal nicely.the old frame had cracks,plus i wanted an extra-cab as there was no room in the standard cab.

well,i sure don't have that much into this one.the blasting was done in trade for rebuilding the leg from an outboard,then a couple hundred for primer...i should be good for a while.
