Question about washer lift

Ok, I bought some washers to do the washer stack lift to level out the front of my 97 4x4 ranger with. The only ones I could find were 1 1/2" I.D. and 3 1/4" O.D. which aren't exactly what is speced in the tech info section on this site, but figured they would work. Question is, why do they need to be so big. The nut that they sit over is only 1 1/8" so why do they need to be 1 3/8" I.D. for? why not get 1 1/4" I.D. to fit over this nut. What keeps them all centered up under the coil spring retainer as well?

well...the reason for the 1 3/8 is to make sure that the outside diameter is wide enough for the coil to rest on it when cycling.....

they can be larger....but not really any smaller....plus not everyone is putting them under stock coils...so better to er' on the larger side than smaller....

as for keeping them centered, most folks tack weld them together...or if ya don't have access to a welder you can put a round of tape on them til ya get the retainer nut tightened down...then they won't go anywhere....

personally i would weld them....

Actually that 1-1/8" nut is 1-3/8" point-to-point, so is why you need 1-3/8" I.D. washers.

You could modify some 1-1/4" washers by using a rat-tail file or similar instrument to create 6 notches in the washer for the nut to fit through however.

Thanks for the reply's guys, but the washers I have there is quite a bit of slop around the stud retaining bolt nut. Granted they are 1 1/2" ID washers, but most 1 3/8" ID washers are acutally 1.5" anyways...so just wondered why all the extra slop around the washer and the reason for it was. Thanks though...
