So...time to start with more questions. I know that the timing is electronically controlled on my 1993 4.0, but could the issues I have had with my truck not wanting to start/stay running/sparatically missing/periodically never starting/etc... be caused by a bad timing belt/chain?

Please, any suggestions will be useful. I just blew up my 1991 7.3l IDI in my F350 so I am stuck trying to get this truck to work again since it will likely cost less and money is tight right now. Thanks TBS Members:)

Unless your 4.0 has >250k on it the timing chain is "unlikely"

Did your truck "sit" for any lengthy period of time?

Months/years?

Not for years, but for a solid 8 months when I broke the drivers side rear axle. And previous to that I only drove it for about 2 months and had just bought it from an ever so trustworthy craigslist salesman:D It has always ran a little rough, but normally, under hard acceleration it wouldn't miss. Only when it was in between 2000 and 3000 rpm's under normal acceleration. Now it just refuses to start the majority of times, and if it does start, it will die as soon as you apply any throttle. After it dies that one time once it starts, it WILL NOT try to start for several days.

off topic, but howd you manage to blow up a 7.3 diesel???? those engines are supposed to be very, very long lasting. how many miles did it have.

Air, fuel, or spark issue?

It's a fuel problem for sure...but I don't know what is causing the problem. I pulled the plugs and am getting spark, but I pulled my injector sensor and am not getting a signal to my injectors. No idea.:dunno:

It was my baby:bawling: It had 95,000 original miles and ran like a champ. Since I have to commute so far to work, I started having my wife drive the truck to save the miles on it, and to save the money on gas. It developed a pinhole leak in the radiator which I was just waiting for some spare change to fix, so I would check it everyday and top it off when needed. My wi9fe didn't do the same, and you really can't expect them to:icon_confused: Hahaha. So she drove it for about a week without coolant till it gave the ghost. I'm pulling the oil pan this weekend to see what kind of damage we're looking at.

The bottom end?

Will it start? Is it froze up? What I'd do if it ain't froze up is to pull the head and start up there. You will get a look at the cylinders and the pistons. If it ain't froze up most likely it just needs some valves.. Maybe a head.
But as long as it was running it still had oil pressure so the bottom end will be good.

I'm just pulling the oil pan to see what I'm up against. If there's debris, then I'm gunna plan for the worst. If it's just milky oil and no metal, then I'm gunna shout Hallelujah and hope it's as simple as a head gasket. I can afford to make minor fixes in both time and cash, but if it's more intensive ie:Pistons, heads, cranks...I'm gunna try and get my Ranger up and running again.

So there is milky oil on the dipstick. Is the level of oil raised over normal?

check your fuel pressure you may not have enough to keep the engine running but can build enough to fire up once but die when you require more.
