I have a sound I've been trying to track down for a long time. At first sounded like the belt tensioner. It was the original, so 150k miles, I figured it was due anyway and replaced it today. It had quite a bit of play, and didn't fully tension the belt, but the sound is still there.

Its sort of a spinning sh sh noise. Could be the idler pulley, or water pump pulley. Sounds similar to rod knock to be honest. Can't locate a precise spot thats louder or clearer sounding but can't.

From under the truck it does sound a little louder. Could be tranny filter, hopefully not an internal bearing, maybe oil pump, ????? Have no clue. Been stumped for months on this one.

its most noticeable in fourth or fifth Gear at steady speed, any rpm.

So I think its in the transmission. The sings is most noticeable in fourth and fifth Gear, but only makes it when tranny is under load. The moment I push in the clutch, it disappears altogether.

Anyone?

park next to a wall and see if you can hear it in neutral. If it goes away when you put pressure on the clutch and comes back when you release, it's probably the throw-out bearing.

I had my girlfriend press the clutch while I laid under the motor. The sound is still there with it pressed in. The clutch also makes a solid click sound when pressed. Anything to worry about?

hard to say... name that sound is a hard game. Especially with no sound.

Anyone on my area have a few minutes to listen to this bugger? Ready to rip it out and throw in a new engine. I'd rather hear noises from a 302 or 2.3 turbo than this turd right now.
