listen, i know this has been discussed MANY times before, but i would like a SINGLE THREAD about fuel mileage in your 2.3/2.5 engines.

im looking for a 95-02 ranger ext. cab, 4 popper, 5-speed and just was curious the mpgs to expect.

ok, lets begin!!!!! :stirthepot:

With my '94 (I know you're looking for newer) I am at around 19mpg. Currently I have 140# of sand tubes in the back and some exhaust issues to iron out. I also have the 3.73 gears if that makes a difference. I expect to do a little better in the Summer. Which will be good when gas is $4 and more.....:shok::annoyed:

With OBDII 2.3's (late 95-97) I don't think there is a big difference between Rangers' MPG regardless of the setup (even 4x4). Under normal driving conditions, you're going to see between 17-19 mpg city and 21-24 on the highway. So an average of 20ish for most Rangers. The only time things will vary is if you have very high gearing (3.08:1) or very low gearing (4.56:1). Higher gearing will probably result in 16-17 city, 24-25 hwy. 4.56 gears will get you more even results; 18 city, 20 hwy. But still both ends of the spectrum produce averages of 19-21 mpg. Tire size will change factors the most.

Personally, my 1996 single cab 5spd 4x4 (4.10:1 diffs) gets mid 17's to low 19's with driving in mostly 25-45mph speedlimits (some short trips on the highway). Lowest tank so far was 15.8mpg but that week was the coldest week we've had this winter (I let the truck warm up/idle longer).

From 1st to 4th gear I generally shift between 2500-3000rpm, depending on what speed I'm accelerating up to. City is lower, county roads/highway shifting is higher. Shifting from 4th to 5th varies. I usually drive around town in 3rd @ about 2000-2300rpm.

That good enough? :derisive:

no, i wanna know how often you sneeze when driving, how many times you flick a booger when no ones looking, and how many hot chicks you turn around and stare at while driving.

:buttkick:

thats what i wanna know

:icon_rofl: :icon_rofl: :icon_rofl: :icon_rofl: :icon_rofl:

im just messing, yeah thats good. i just wanted to know if i could get over 20 city/highway mixed.

:thefinger: I try to flick my boogers on peoples' windshields as I pass. How many hot chicks? The numbers are too high to count. :D

Doesnt really fit what you're looking for but: I think the 2WD 93 - early 95 2.3L Rangers got the best MPG... they didn't have all the emissions stuff that the 96+ Rangers did. They had the best mix of fuel injection, good ignition, and choking emissions devices. I think they were rated at 20 city and 26 hwy.

I have a 94 ext cab 2.3 5 speed, with 3.73 gears, I was getting 19 around town, I moved outta town down the highway 15 miles, and I get about 15 mpg over a tank (60mph highway). thats 15 highway miles and 1 city mile one way. I'm stumped. and I wan to move back to town. lol.

My 99 Ext Cab 2.5 5 spd 2wd averages about 18.5. However It does have a fiberglass canopy, fullsize lumber rack and probably 400 lbs or more of tools in it and it has the infamous 2.5 rough idle that I can't track down.

That's maybe 60/40 highway/city, with the 'highway' usually involving a lot of time spent sitting in traffic, doing 65-70 the rest of the time. A good tank is 19+ and once I saw 20.5.

with my 94 i usually drive about a 70/30 highway/city and when its warmer usually get 20-22 but now when its below 20 on most days when i leave the house and have sand in the back i usually get 18-19.

I have a 95' with 130k plus (odometer was broke when I bought it) and get on average 22 City/Hwy. When I drive all Hwy. I get around 27 at 65/70 mph and the cruise on. I'm in the middle of a major tune up (replacing the timing belt, belt tensioner, PVC Valve, Wires, plugs, Vacuum lines and fuel filter) will post the difference it makes. Also replaced water pump, thermostat, power steering pump and lines, serpentine belt. I have checked the DPFE, EVR, EGR Valve, Coil Packs and Fuel pump pressure for operation and all passed.

bone stock vehicles widow you should be looking at standard across the board 26-30 mpg based on driving distances and habits, modded tires gears etc. slightly less, maintenace levels maybe less. My 4 cyl 92 with 2.3 and 2wd got around 12-16 mpg cuz it had a bad o2 sensor and maf.

yeah itll be stock.

i plan on doing 235/70/15 tires, a cai, a cherry bomb turbo catback. and a hurst shifter (not for mpg reasons lol)

if it breaks the 20's thats all i want.

Greetings Blackwidow..

Before my most recent issue with the truck (i have a cold idle issue that has yet to be resolved :annoyed:) with 225/60/16 & 3:45 rear my 5sp would get between 300-350 miles out of a tank. Thats country driving.. so its not quite city not quite highway. Note: when I filled up after running 350 miles on the trip i filled up with 16 gallons out of the 16.9 capacity.

I expect this to change when I do the rear to compensate for the hills here. Almost 200k and still going strong though. Good luck on the truck search

thanks everyone so far, lets keep it going.

im def. getting a truck after reading all these. i cant afford the explorer anymore. its really bad on gas.
