I was wondering I bought a used 2001 ford ranger stepside, 4.0 auto, I can't tell by looking at the outside, what do I have a xl, xlt or an edge?
I have rubber floor mats, 60/40 cloth/vinyl seats, am/fm 6 cd changer, 2 full doors, 2 access doors. How do I tell what I have?

there easily decifered....sounds like you have an edge

Sounds more to me like an XLT... does it have decals that say "edge" on the sides? Does it have those huge plastic "Top Rail Covers" that stick up about 2-3" from the bed top?

If it said Edge on the side i guess I would know that is was an edge, I have no letters of any kind on the truck. I don't know if it has been painted or not but it is black as night. I don't have the top rail covers on the bed top but someone added a topper and may have modified it. I would post a picture but I haven't figured out how to post one on this site as of yet.

1 says edge, 1 says XLT, my question still wasn't answered????I have a picture of my truck in my profile, but I don't know how to attach it to my post or to my name

there is a ranger at a used car lot around here that is just like that one, but it's red, and it's an XLT

Here, did it for you... all you have to do is right click on it, click save image link, and then put it in between the
brackets.

It would appear (to me at least) that your ranger is an EDGE, because your front bumper is the same color as the truck... whereas (at least I think) on an XLT your bumper would be chrome.

If you have a black plastic grille and front bumper, it's an XL. If it has chrome grille and bumper, it's most likely an XLT. If it has body color bumpers, it's an Edge.

what does your hood look like? Faux cowl = edge

just from the looks it looks like an edge. my looks the same but its not a step side and its a blue 2004. but i say its an edge. stop buy the local dealer and have them run the vin. thats how i got alot of info on mine when i was fresh to the ranger scene.

If the OP has vinyl AND fabric seats and plastic/vinyl floor it's most definately an Edge model. I could tell just by the description of the truck. The avatar screams EDGE too. And the blown up pic posted above is most definately Edge. Don't know if it's the OP's truck...but...whatever.

Some cliffnotes:

-XL's never came with stepside or vinyl & fabric seats. I don't even think you can get an XL with 4drs. 6cd deck was unavailable on XL's.
-XLT's only came with full cloth seats and carpet flooring. XLT's had chrome bumper and textured valence.

You've got an Edge. Edge models have: Cloth & Vinyl seats unique to Edge models, color matched and smoothed front and rear bumpers, color matched and smoothed flares(if styleside), plastic/vinyl flooring instead of carpeting, all Edges(even 2wd) have the same raised 'powerdome' hood as the XLT 4x4's as well as the same grille and same style bumper with fogs. The non-power optioned trucks have basic door panels that are carried over from the XL models. XLT's w/o power options got nicer door panels iwth map pockets.

Ford has the Edge model as one step down of XLT, one step up from XL. But in all reality, they are basically the same truck...they can be equipped the exact same options as an XLT.

I believe wannabe is right. If you like tho, I have access to the OASIS system, so if you post your vin I can run the check and say for sure.
