wrong ubolt size?

So im in the middle of a explorer 8.8 swap and I pulled the top spring plates off a Dana 60, both axles being 3.25 diameter, I go to buy ubolts at Napa, tell them how long and my maxle diameter and get home and they are loose. They are 3.5 wide, I called them up and he said he made them to my plates and that it doesn't matter if they are losses on the sides? Did I just get screwed out of $40?

You paid $40 for U-bolts?!?

I can get the plates, bolts, and nuts for an FX4 L2, which are perfect for $30 or less.

If they are loose at the sides it will allow the axle to flop. IIRC I had to spread mine a hair to get them over the axle tubes.


I'd return those bolts if you can and order the bolts from an 05 Fx4 Level II Ranger at the dealer. I know those will fit correctly because that's what I used.

They are 5/8 bolts, and I'm trying to return them , they are custom bent so it will be a fight, I told the guy my axle is 3.25 diameter, and thanks

Luckily went back and talked to the manager, happens to be my bosses brother so I got new ones bent and he took 50% off the old ones so all in all I have 4 new ubolts for $20

where was your torque at?


if you were past 125 then going to the smaller spaced bolt may have been necessary, but i cant see them not drawing up right if the plate is correct.


i wont use the 1/2 in junk, not sure if the fx4 stuff is 9/16 or bigger.


40 bux is fair for 5/8 though...but 25 is better. i usually get them for 25, and you can reuse them a few times when you stay under the tq rating. i do this because i change axles and springs often. 5/8 brings the beef in a big way. you can ruin a normal 7.5 reefing those down.

Plates were right, it came out to $20 for 4 ubolts, nuts, and washers, they just bent them to wide, then told me they don't have to be tight on the sides of the axle, but its all sorted out now
