In my 86 Ford Ranger, I drained the transfer case oil out for the first time since I’ve had it. I noticed it had gear oil in it. What I’m afraid of is, I might have the same problem as what happened with the transmission. It had a GL five gear oil that destroyed the synchros. What I’m wondering is does the transfer case on this specific vehicle have syncros in it that I may have to worry if this oil in there was also a GL five concoction. I know it’s supposed to have an ATF in it so now I’m a little worried.

I've had a couple of those apart lately and don't remember seeing in brass. I'd be more concerned about it being to thick for the pump to pickup and essentially running dry.

^ what he said

As far as I know, all Ranger transfer cases take ATF and so do the manual transmissions. I've used Mobil 1 ATF, Valvoline Synpower Transfer Case Fluid, and Redline D4 in my older ones, my 2020 uses Redline D6.

At least one exception. The Mitsubishi manual 5 speed transmission requires gear lube.
