Hey, I was thinking about tossing an electric fan into my '89 b2, and was wondering what is available in the wreckers that fits/performs well? How much work is involved with running an electric fan? Obviously it needs to be powered... I was thinking of just running in on a switch to the dash, so I can turn it off while its cold to warm up...?

Thanks.

yeah, grab one from a taurus. as far as wiring, you can get a thermostat that will make it come on at a certain temp and then turn off once it cools to a certain temp, that's what i'd do

taurus, and a 88 mustang fan switch, tee it in the coolant line and run it through dual 40 amp relays.

key on power to the switch side of the relay, use 12 gauge wire for power and ground, if you have already upgraded to a 3g type alternator i usually run fuse power from the alternator.

I tried the Tarus fan on my truck but the 2.3 is too long, I would have had to completely butcher the stock tarus fan shroud, I had taken 1/2" off and still had 1/2" interference with the water pump.

I have some Nissan and a Honda fan that I got from a coworker, the Honda one looks like the best bet but only covers about half the area of the radiator, still close to the water pump.

they're about 3" wider than a ranger/BII/Explorer radiator and about 2" shorter, from the front of the shroud to the back of the motor is like 4" though, in my combination of 4 cylinder and big explorer radiator it's too much, with a 2.9 it's probably less of an issue

often the shroud has to be modded.

with a 4.0 they are too tight for me for a 4x4 that gets used to suggest.

but there are different versions of it.

the single and dual speed single chrysler minivan fans also work well like mentioned above, i have had those on my truck as well with the 5.0 engines, but they were more sensitive to the mud and goo.

i have a list of fans i experimented with in various configurations somewhere.

currently i run an intech v8 fan from a lincoln. it effortlessly cools my diesel v8.

i also have a huge radiator. just one fan cools it fine in most situations. railing on it in low range and 42 in tires requires both fans on low. never needed high yet. not even hooked up to the normal system.

i basically suggest the biggest oem type fan you can fit with the most simple and robust wiring setup. these are the most cost effective in my experience. where i am from an expensive fan is 25 bux at a yard.

um, foxbodied mustangs have mechanical fans...

everyone i've seen do this said they use the taurus e-fan, you can get a thermostat that sits inside the veins of the radiator, to read the rad tempature, if the cold side of the rad is over a certain point, it comes on...

T-junctions work great for pressure sensors, and really shitty for temperature ones, your sensor is going to mid-read by at least ten degrees if not worse.

If you use just a switch make sure to use a relay and use a fuse for it. parts stores sell an adjustable fan switch but it's still a good idea to use a relay and fuse if not included with it as well. I put a TPI 305 in a 86 Monte SS and I used a Chevy Citation fan and never had any problems. it didn't have a shroud at all, just one built into the outer diameter of the fan blade itself. If you get one from the junk yard try to get the plug-in for it.
