would you rather have a 5.0V8 or the 2.5 Diesel?

I think I asked this question on the old board before it died, and it was a fun discussion.

If Ford decided not to kill the Ranger in the size and basic design that it is now, and they started offering a 5.0 (or 4.6L or whatever) V8 engine or that 2.5L diesel (or whatever size it is), both for the same price and in any cab/bed/drive combo, which would you rather have?

What if the V8 was just the standard Crown Vic 230 whatever HP engine? What if it was the H.O. 300+ HP V8?

What if the diesel was the basic one they use in other countries, or what if it was a newer 5-cylinder inline engine with loads of torque? What if it really did get 50+ MPG like some VW diesels do?

It's be a hard decision for me, but I'd probably go for the H.O. V8 in 4WD for the raw power and rumbly sound and offroad fun, but then I would probably buy another 2wd with a diesel when the first one was paid off.

If i could build a 2008 or 2009 ranger. I would take the super cab, 4x4 with the DOHC 4.6. Or if i can get really stupid, the 5.4 thats in the Ford GT!!! As for transmission, i would want a manual transmission, but for the sake of going off road i would go with the auto.
And i would get it with the in dash touch screen nav/radio system that the f-150s have, with a full black leather interior. I would also want somekind of high rider or offroad package that offered a better suspension, and disc brakes in the back.

They should offer a really tricked out ranger in super low production numbers(like the saleen rangers). Something really cool like what i want :P haha. From a do it from factory look at it, they can do it WAY easier than we could. They could essentially build the ranger around the engine, instead of modifying the ranger significantly to fit the engine.

If i could get that kindda truck, i would be all over it! That would be the only thing on the planet i would buy brand spankin new, EXPECIALLY if they gave me a truck that was 4 inches longer in the cab to fit a bench!!

V-8 in any form. My '05' GT could get 27 MPG on the road with the stock internals but with a CAI amd tune. The Roush can get almost 24 MPG doing 70 mph but has 427 HP, that's better than most mini-vans and a whole lot more fun. You wont see another pushrod motor from Ford even thou I love the ones I have. Hope they sure don't kill the Ranger as we know it.

I would take hands down a small turbo diesel. The power and performance from a diesel is just unrivaled. Sure any joe can make a gasser a killer engine, but it take a real engineer to fully understand the potetial of a diesel and cradle it.

If they offered a diesel i would definately want a straight axle back up front with a high pinion. It would have to have a stick and manual transfer case, cloth seats, and good instrumentaion on the dash. Basically i would want them to pack a f-350 under the skin of a Ranger.

agreed with black betty. i would deff want to go for the diesel because of fuel cost's and the kind of torque they make. Another thing i think we all wish ford would do is offer some kind of ranger package with a solid front axle up front. like that would ever happen..

diesel. the potential of any modern diesel is nothing short of amazing. a friend of mine has a 2500 duramax that runs 12 second quarter miles. its insane.

Do you have a video of this? I would love to see that big ass truck haulin down the drag strip

I'd take a small turbo diesel any day over a gasser, that is for an offroad truck anyway.

If I could, I'd get a 2008 Ford Ranger, White w/ black/silver rims, Ext. Cab, V6 Turbo Diesel, 5 Speed, Solid Axle up front, Factory Lockers and 4.56 gearing and 35 inch mudders, ha That'll be the day.

No diesel is going to get 50mpg in a Ranger.... a Ranger is significantly heavier than a VW and not nearly as slippery aerodynamically.

Would I want a V8? No.

would I want a 2.5 liter diesel, turbodiesel or 5cyl turbodiesel? No.

Would I want a 5cyl turbodiesel with 3.0-3.4liters displacement?
Mabey.

But if there's a 3.5 liter GDI multifuel V6 in the future (and there is)?
Then screw the diesel.

Gasoline Direct injection on an engine also capable of burning Butanol?

Again, screw the diesel!

like 97blackbeauty said diesel all the way. even though the ranger is bigger than a jetta you can easily get 35-50 mpg no problem. i would be happy with a v8.

diesel, i think it would be cool to swap a older diesel into a bronco II also.

I think diesels are cool, but I've always been a V-8 guy. Give me the 5.0 offered in the '93 cobra (240 HP) in a short standard cab... start crying Dakota V-8's. Calypso Coral red, Matte black center section on the hood, Cragar S/S mags or slots. Long chrome Hurst handle on my 5-sp. Should get mileage in the 20's if I behave... do trips to Lowe's and the dump, and hurt the occasional bozo next to me at the light.

I would rather have a V-8, the stuff they have to do these modern diesels to get past emissions is rather scary and makes them very difficult to modifiy.

A 2.3T would be fun to have too.

between the 2, I would go diesel probably.
