would any used car dealers take my truck as a trade in? It has problems but still runs and drives. trade in book value in fair condition is $1225 for it. Would they take it, or would they not want to bother?

Most dealers I know will take anything for trade. I got $2500 for an old Pontiac J2000 and it was a total rust bucket.

I've never seen someone say the wouldn't take a running vehicle as a trade in, what they do with it after that depends on the condition of it though.

If it's bad enough it may just go to auction.

MOST trade-in's either go to auction or to a wholesaler

But then again much of a used vehicle's "trade-in value" is actually
"Creative financing" that is simply added to the principle of the loan.

And it's always been my considered opinion that financing a used vehicle
is the financial equivelent of bending over, spreading your cheeks and
asking to be sodomized.

you often get a shorter term loan with smaller payments on
a NEW vehicle than you'll get on a used vehicle.

I agree w AD. I was sodomized by a dealership when I bought my 1st Ranger. I traded in a beautiful 72 F-100 for " 1200 dollars". I was young and stupid. If u wanna sell it, do it urself. Take the cash, go to the bank and get ur own financing. The dealerships just want the sale, they don't care if u can handle the payments. The bank won't try to talk u into a bunch of other crap either. Find the vehicle u want, talk to ur financial institution, and then get ur new truck. Thats just my thoughts, It was a heckuva lesson.

On the bright side that truck went 250K b4 the tranny went out and then got burnt up in a grass fire. I miss that truck.

They'll take it but you might not get book value. OTOH, you might get more if they plow some of the profit margin from the vehicle you're buying into the trade-in value so you think you're getting a better deal.

Normally you will get a better deal selling it on your own but that can take longer. I've tried it a number of times but usually just end up trading them in because I put a lot of miles on my vehicles and although they're immaculate, no one wants to look at them because of the miles. It took me almost a year to sell my 87 Astro, 140,000 miles, and I was only asking $1600. People here are funny. It was kind of a spare vehicle at that point so I wasn't in a hurry, but I spent about $300 in classified ads before I said the hell with it and just left it outside my office with a for sale sign on it.

X2. Most of the time the money they take off the vehicle can be talked down if your good enough anyhow. Try to talk the seller down, and then try to sell your truck on your own. It takes more time, but you often times come out ahead.

well ill be getting a used truck i can afford now and will be paying it off. no financing. My truck runs and drives, but the mechanic basically told me it needs a new engine. Im thinking i might actually be able to get more trading it in than selling it but idk. Maybe ill bring it by a used car dealer and see what theyd give me for it

Yep. That's very true. One of the temp gigs I work on is at a wholesale auto auction in Londonderry, NH. They've got deals coming in from as far away a Jersey & Delaware to buy stuff!

I've seen sone nice Rangers go through there recently, including a slick '94 STX a few weeks ago.

What they'll give you for it is entirely dependant on how much you're going to pay them for your new car. For instance, suppose they have a car you want to buy. Without a trade in, they'll sell the car for $5000 cash. Of course, you won't know this because they never list a firm price on anything because they want to be able to play the trade in game with you.

So then you offer you're trade in that's really worth about $500 due do it needing a new engine. The salesman takes a look at it and says he can give you $2000 for your trade in and give you an awesome deal of $6500 on the new vehicle. This is nothing but a load of crap sales tactic. He's selling the new car for $5000 and giving you $500 for the trade in. He makes you feel great about getting so much for your trade in that you're ready to complete the deal right then and there.

Instead, I'd find a car you like, reach a firm cash price with the salesman, and then tell him you have a trade in. You won't get much for the trade in like this (probably a few hundred), but at least you're not falling prey to his insulting sales tactics.

Id definitely not bring up the trade in until after we'd made a deal. Im just trying to figure out if id be able to get more as a trade in than private party. I know its not worth all that much but idk if it would help me get a better deal on a truck at a dealer if i were to trade it in.

I wish!!!! I've seen some nice looking trucks go through there. In fact, I've seen everything from a nearly new '10 Camero (repo'd with only 6,000 miles on it) to some nice classics ('65 Malibu?), oddballs (FWD Lotus) and loads of Benz's & Beemer's. In addition to the run-of-the-mill stuff like Tauruses, Toyotas, GM products, and Hondas.

Maybe you could make nice with a dealer and tell him what you're looking for. Say a mid-90's 4x4/stick Ranger with less than 150,000 miles?
The place is called the Auto Auction of New England. Sadly, it's a for dealers only.

I'm just doing it as a temp gig until I find a F/T job.

Ive heard dealers dont like to do that, they get it trouble.

Id be looking for more like an early 2000s 4 door 4.0 auto 4x4 with less than 120,000mi thats not a stepside for about $5000. Im dreaming

Well, if you ask nicely, I've seen stuff like that go through. Don't know what they went for.
