worn out thrust washers?

i was informed this morning by the kid i bought the d35 off of that about 20k miles before he stopped running the truck he kept having issues with the thrust washers wearing out every few thousand miles. he said he didnt know why but he did mention that at one point he had put a new spindle on the pass side and maybe the drivers side as well. is there anyway that if the job was not done correctly (i.e. splines not matched correctly) it could be the reason for the washers to be wearing out??? i need to get this figured out and corrected asap b/c i dont want to put it in until everything is all set

The splined washer that hold the shaft in the spindle?

Most common cause for those getting eaten up is a lack of (or improper type) grease on the RH axleshaft slip spline.

not sure exactly i havent had time to take a look at it but ill be able to this afternoon so ill check it out

ok ya it is the splined washer

if its not some kind of a grease problem anyideas what else it could be?
i was told the 4x4 works fine and without problems other than the washers needing to be replaced every few k miles

The axle slip spline needs a Moly CV joint grease. I think you'll be fine if you clean it up and lube it well (whatever you do, don't use Moly grease inside the hub around the wheel bearings though).

Another option would be to swap to the later 3 piece washers ('95-'97). These have a Delrin (slippery hard plastic) center that eliminates the metal-on-metal contact at the edge of the spindle.
