I don't always sit in one spot either. But with a direct fire ship you mostly worry about your one little area, and you are controlling one ship.
In a CV you are managing at least 3, up to 5 air wings, plus the ship, all over the entire map. It easy to miss when an enemy ship has come up the edge of the map and gotten through. Most times someone will warn you, but by then it is often too late, especially if it was a destroyer or a battleship that got through.
There is no outrunning a DD, and they are hard to hit with anything a carrier has. A CV may outrun a BB's hull, but will never outrun it's guns.
