Not sure about other models, but I just finished an oil change on my friend's 2003 Corolla...could NOT get the stupid oil filter off the "usual" way (from underneath), so I left the old filter on since the oil looked pretty good.

The next day her starter went south and I offered to try to swap it out...long story, but the price range was between $166 (reman and in stock) to $210 (5 hour wait) and $590 (new from dealership 2 days wait) just for the starter. Labour would have been $210 from dealership...so with parts and labour plus taxes it would have cost over $800 to replace a starter motor...

WTF? At first I ordered a new one from a parts store at $210 (minus recore) but then got the reman for $166 because it was identical to the one I removed and I would have had to wait 5 hours for the new part to come in.

I took the starter out from above by simply removing the electric fan...took about 20 minutes to remove (once I figured where everything was) and about 10 minutes to install...AND...I got the filter off from the top because there was much more room to swing a wrench that way than from underneath...

The instructions I found to remove the starter advised to go from underneath but I really hate lying on my back working upwards...and it took much less time just by removing the fan...

Not sure about other models, but that was probably the easiest starter R/R I've ever done...just hope the reman unit lasts...

But the moral of the story is...if it wasn't for having read 10,000 or more posts by other members on TRS and seeing how things were done I would never have even attempted this task...
