Just a hello and intro, my name is aaron! I've got a 2001 ford ranger 3.0 2wd. Was my daily driver for 5 years now. Hoping to set it aside and build a little dirt smasher out of it! Am interested in the 5.0 swap from the explorers. Most of the forums detailing the swap seem like they begin from a 4wd ranger. Is this because of a bigger engine bay? Am I stuck from the get-go with my 2wd? Thanks in advance and hope to learn much from the collective minds!

Welcome to TRS

No, 4WD or 2WD are the same size.

Just follow the 5.0l builds and leave out 4WD parts, find a 5.0l Explorer with 2WD and use it for parts.

2WD "dirt smasher" will be limited, even with 5.0l, but to each his own.
