Okay guys I need some help. I want to make a jewlery box for my girlfriend for xmas. Unfortunatly I do not have a table saw and router to make something other than just a box. So I found a kit online that I get to assemble and I can paint and whatnot to make it fit in her room.

box kit

There is the link to the kit. Now because I want to make it a little more personal I would like to theoretically cut a hole in the top, and place a piece of glass, and have it fastened on so you can peer in. Here is what I was thinking. My dad has a router that I can use because I will happen to be in town to my parents place after it arrives, unfortunatly it will not be here by wednesday :(

So I was thinking of cutting say a 4x6 hole, and have a piece of glass of say 4.25x6.25. I want the glass to sit flush with the top of the wood. Here is where the router would come in handy. Could I trim the thickness of the glass as well as 1/4'' in so the glass could sit flat and have 1/4'' of the wood to hold it from falling through? I guess this is what I am imagining below. The dashed lines would be the wood and the part with glass is the glass. I would use some sort of fastern at the coreners to keep it in place. Also I would like to have her initials engraved into the glass as kind of a final touch.

Now for those of you with experience, tell me if my idea will work. Also a big part will play as to when the kit arrives how thick the wood is and all that. Also would you recommend any special bits for the router to make a 90* cut. I can adjust the height to fit the glass, whether it sits completly flush or raised just a hair, I am not sure yet.

my thoughts...

you got the right idea.

cut your overall hole a quarter inch smaller than the glass (as you have stated above) and for your corner fasteners get a brass plate and you can dremel some decorative corner pieces. Predrill 2 or 3 holes in the brass corners to put nails in, then use brass finishing nails and nail the corner pieces down to hold the glass in. must be very carefull here....

I would also see if you can get the glass in tempered safety glass. it will make it much harder to break.

good luck, and post pics of it when you are done :P

You could do that or you could put the glass in from the bottom and put trim (or even router the edge) around the outer edge of the window on the top of the lid. Then you couldn't see the outside edge of the glass and it would look more like a normal window. The trim would be the easiest because then you wouldn't have the risk of messing it up with the router.

I would think of using plexiglass easy to cut and is real hard to break, and I think I would do it from below and hold it in with tabs like you would see on the back of a pic. frame to hold the pic.in. just my ideas. But good luck sounds like a cool thing.

Maybe a thought more time comsuming to find the resources to do but in the glass have a pic painted or engraved to really customize it. but again just a idea.

well last year I got her a necklace and earrings for her bday and chrismas presents. I acctually was planning on having her initials engraved in the glass. Can I still have that done with plexi-glass?

Also would a place like home depot or Lowes have glass that I could get this done or would I need to go to a specilty place? I live in Sacramento, CA if that helps any.

I would say for safety glass you probably would be best off going to a glass place. probably won't be that much money, probably under 10 bucks.

plexiglass you can get at a lumberyard. the thing with plexiglass is that it scratches easily.

Okay I will stay away from plexiglass if it scratches. I will find a local glass place and see if I can get a 4x6 piece engraved!
