92 with a 2.9 5 speed. I turn the key over and it clicks like a bad connection. I cleaned the connection and it turns out the battery is bad so I replaced it and its still doing it. Tried jumping across the solenoid and nothing happens apart from a single click. The wire going to the starter is fine and Im about to take the starter out and check it have I missed something?

Clutch interlock...it kills power to the started if not engaged properly...check that out and you can bypass it if needed...

Other than that it could be the connection under the hood for the clutch interlock...there is a connector by the driver side fender that connects your headlights, signals et al...look at the red/light blue wire and see if it is loose in the socket...

next go to the solenoid and there is a little red or black boot on the solenoid...make sure that is tight...

Mine does the same thing also...and I have to wiggle all the wires, try the starter etc until I find the one that is loose...finally got them all connected properly (or so I thought) and the clutch bypass was loose...now it's good to go...again...

i was having the same problem with my ranger... it turns out there was a ground going to my frame that was spliced from the factory and where the insulation was taken off there was a clamp type thing bolted to the frame. anyway the end coming from the battery was broken off so everytime i wanted to start my truck i had to reach in and shove the wire together until i finally got around to pulling it off and cleaning the connection.
