Won't start unless CEL comes on...

It's not a big problem but just a little annoying. I have a '98 3.0 and sometimes it won't start unless the CEL is on when you turn it to the accessory position in the ignition. If the CEL is off then it will crank and crank but not start. It will do it every now and then, but when it does, I have to let it sit for at least 5 min before the CEL will come on again. Also, when the CEL does come on, it sounds gives a hiss then click like the fuel is being primed or something. Any clue what is causing this?

The CEL is supposed to come on when the ignition is turned to the "ON" position, and then turn "OFF" after the engine starts.

The other sound you are describing sounds like your fuel pump is working properly.

Maybe a bad or out of adjustment ignition switch?

Check your engine ground. Also check out your battery and cables. Sounds like you aren't getting power to your PCM.

Thanks, I think it might be the cables as I have been having problems with them over the past few months. Sure does help to narrow things down
