Have an issue with my 96 Ranger transmission. While driving around, I noticed it didn't go into first gear on my first attempts at stop lights. I'd end up doing the "attempt, wiggle, attempt again". Usually always went in to gear the second time. Upon further investigation, I noticed a slight metallic whirling noise when the clutch isn't depressed (foot off) coming from the transmission. But when I put the clutch pedal to the floor, the sound takes a moment before going away entirely. I then found the two problems go hand in hand. Once the sound dissipates, the 1st gear goes in with no problem. After doing hours of online research, I'm hoping that someone out there can help me understand what is happening with my tranny, what possible solutions there are, and if it's worth the time/money to fix myself. Thanks for your time.
