I went out to my 04 this mornin to go to work and put the truck in reverse just to almost stall out and not go anywhere. i feels like the parking brake is stayin engaged even when i disengage it. gonna take a look at it after work when i have some time because lord knows you cant do it on uncle sams time or dime lol, just wonderin if anyone else has had somethin similar and what you tried.

Auto trans? Stick? You try any other gear to see if it would move? Could be a lot wrong with it. If it is a stick put it in gear and rock it back and forth a few times and try it again. Could be a clutch throwout bearing or a gear in the tranny has gone out or more problems. You might have to get it to a shop, Bro if you don't know much about a tranny. I hate pulling them out and rebuilding them. it is a lot of work but I have had to do a few rebuilds for my sister and a friend or two in the past.

yes it is a manual trans, the shift forks seem to move freely and dont have an issue gettin it into gear. my roommate has been stationed here longer than i have and he said sometimes the same happens on his subaru due to all the rain and salt in the air here. i have heard of similar situations like that but not over the course of a weekend. i did manage to get it rollin, i tried rockin it but because i was all the way up to the sidewalk there was limited movement. i pretty much put it in reverse and gave it a boot full. eventually it did come free. definitely somethin i'm gonna have to keep a very close eye on, never even thought of the throw out bearing...good call straycat

TOB is a horrible call. The TOB gives a moving ride surface to contact the pressure plate fingers so that you don't chew something up every time you put the clutch down. It really has very little to do with moving or stalling.

Also, any internal trans issues of this magnitude should have presented with some other symptom before this level of broke happened.

It does kinda sound like the brake stuck. Next time it does it (if there is a next time) drop it in 4-low and try again.

And roll down the windows so you can hear which side pops!
Pretty common for a rear shoe to stick.

This.

If you are in a rust-prone area (sounds like you are) then it is not unheard of for a rear drum to seize. Giving it a good whack with a hammer should do the trick, but dont **** up your rim.

My caravan drum seized up a few times, and just giving it some gas (rear drum, front wheel drive van) was enough to free it most times. The last time I dragged the tire a few feet with no movement, so I gave up. Came back later, took the wheel off, gave the drum a few whacks with the backside of an axe and it free'd right up.

I've had a few parking brake lines sieze. Usually if they're not used for an extended length of time and someone decides to use it, but I've had mine stick before.

It sounds like a stuck shoe on the drum though.

Used to have this problem on a different vehicle that I had. I would bog down trying to go backwards. What it would do is unlock going forward. So I would always leave some space in front so I could rock it forward. I'm not sure about a Ranger but leave some space so you can rock it forward and back.

I had this problem on a VW Vanagon I was given. My brother-in-law was helping me tow it to my parking area. Found the brakes badly worn and locking up the drums on the rear. Replaced everything except the hardware and greased that.

Yeah, this is a big problem around here.

Ford tells us to not check parking brake operation without the customer's permission because if they don't use it because the cables can stick in the applied position.

The State says "parking brake must be checked and work for safety inspection".

I only check them if the customer has left it set when I get in the car though. I figure that having it work only helps if the customer is actually using it.

I take the same approach to seat belts. People who use them won't wait to complain about it, people who don't use it will just get upset when you tell them they have to fix it.
