just bought a broken 93 ranger club cab,guy I got it from took it to a mechanic bacuse he was losing clutch pressure,5 speed tranny worked fine, the mechanic replaced the slave cylinder(and possibly the fly wheel)when it was put back together the transmission would not go into any gear which is how I bought it.I'm hoping the mechanic may have just put something together wrong causing the trany to lock up.was also hoping someone had some ideas before I pull the transmission. One person told me the flywheel may be on backwards.
that flywheel thing sounded a little off,I have to drop the tranny anyway so I 'll figure it out then,it's been snowing for two days and I have no garage.I do know that the tranny worked when it went to the mechanic,my guess is the slave cylinder was put in wrong or the master cylinder is screwed.

Will it go in gear with the motor off?
I dont think you can put the flywheel on backwords....

x2 If the flywheel were on backwards, the clutch wouldnt bolt on. Theres no way that could happen.

If it goes into gear with the engine off, then its a clutch issue. If it wont go into gear no matter what, then its a tranny issue.

Do you know if the master cylinder was even looked at?

Yeah... not a shot in hell the flywheels backwards. Does it not go into gear RUNNING or will it not go into gear at all? If it doesn't go into gear running but you can get it in with the engine off I would start by bleeding it all. Many people don't realize how tricky a Ranger is to bleed, and it could be that the mechanic didn't get the air out. The easiest and 'surest' way is the bench-bleed the entire system before putting it back in.

bleeding these trucks are a pain in the ass.

While bleeding the clutch and you think you got all the air out. well you mine as well keep going becasue there is probabaly more air haha

oh and DOT 3 brake fluid numbs the lips

How in the HELL would you put the flywheel on backwards? It's not like it's hard to see which side is machined and which one is rusty. Or which one has the locating pins AND BOLT HOLES for the pressure plate. I don't see this happening without some serious substance abuse being involved. Only a little easier than putting the pressure plate in backwards....

Now, putting the DISK in backwards is entirely possible and even quite easy. Most of them have the flywheel side labelled, but it's not always all that obvious (and it's occasionally absent entirely). If you do this, one side of the disk will contact the flywheel bolts instead of the flywheel surface, so you'll get poor engagement.

I can think of one thing. Did you leave it in gear when you took the shifter out? If so the shift rails aren't aligned. When you look down into the hole, you should see two buttons on each side. They should be straight across from each other. If not, it won't shift worth a damn. You'll have to use picks or screwdrivers to minipulate them into the right position.

Yeah..that'd be my bet too..it's not too hard to bump those out of position even if it was out of gear when the shifter was pulled. I've had to go back in and straighten those out a couple times. A big screw driver or ratchet handle will move them and make sure they are in the neutral position. Move them back and forth until you get the feel for how it works...Good Luck!

most of the info i have about the truck I got from the previous owner,I bought it broke for $100 cause it's in good shape and has a rebuilt motor, I do know it was taken to a mechanic with a working 5 speed to have the slave cylinder replaced and was brought back not being able to go in gear,I've got it out and can find a couple of gears so I'll try the shift rails.I've got no manual yet and apprieate the info.I don't think the tranny's gone so I hope this is it

AWSOME!!!!!!just came in from my little shop and y'all were right about the shift rails, just wish I had have known before I spent all day in the snow pulling the tranny out,oh well that's the life of a backyard learn as you go mechanic.thanks everyone I think that fixed 'er.hav'nt even had this truck running yet so well let evryone know how good a broken $100 ranger works.
