Wiring harness and swap Q's

I have a 94 ranger, came with a 4.0 V6 when I bought it. I believe the engine was swapped into it and the engine was from a 93 since it doesn't have EGR. I could be wrong I'm kind of new to Rangers. When I got the Ranger the engine was blown and I was well aware of that, so I bought another used 4.0 complete engine. As I was cleaning the new engine I started noticing the EGR and the accesory brackets were a bit different. At this point the new engine looks brand new. I cleaned it all up, prepped it, and painted everything silver and black with 2000 degree paint. I decided to use the wiring harness that came with the truck as it looked to be in better shape. Problem is the old harness doesn't have the EGR connection or one big connector that hooks up to the engine bay (near the fusebox). On the new harness there are 3 of those big connectors. Also the new engine has what looks like a small module with a connector on the rear of the engine, and the old one has a blocking plate there. I think it's for timing, I'm not really sure. My main question is, should I cut open the new harness and figure out what I need and transfer it? Or should I just clean up the old harness and transfer whatever is broken? I'll post up some pics tonight to kind of clarify my questions. Oh I also forgot to ask, what is the difference between the red and blue top injectors?

The connectors on top in the back of the motor is for your timing, that is where your distributor normally goes. The one with no connector there has a sensor on the front of the motor on the crank pulley, thats how it gets its timing...I would use the new motor with the old harness, but you may have to re-use your old intake if the harness does not match up...

The problem is my old intake doesn't have a EGR port, since I have to deal with Cali emmissions I decided to leave the new intake with the EGR. So can I leave that back connection unplugged or should I use the old block plate? My truck is a 94 should it have that third connector somewhere or is that connector for newer trucks?
 
IIRC the 93's did not have EGR, 94's did. But if it you got it set up without, I'd leave it like that, cause chances are it was running. I'd use the EGR blockoff plate...

Wouldn't I have trouble passing emmissions though?
 
Unfortunately, you have to use the harness/system that came in the truck, cause the ignition system setup is different from the ECU in the 93 and 94. You might have to get an engine harness and ECU from a 94 truck so you can pass emissions in Cali...I don't believe they accept an older engine in a newer truck, but you can put a newer engine in an older truck, providing you take all emissions that go with the newer engine...

That's what I have now, I just need help figuring out the engine harness. The extra connections I need are the EGR valve, the EGR solenoid, and the crank position sensor. Can I do away without the position sensor?
 
No, the CPS is your distributor, without it your engine will not run. IIRC the CPS is pinned in different locations in the ECU for the different year trucks..You will have to use the setup that has the harness matched with the engine components. The 3 plugs should be CPS, EGR, and injector harness...

Say I put the original harness on the truck, what would I need to change in the truck for everything to work? I'm sorry for so many questions but I just want to get everything figured out before I drop it in.
 
You would need the harness from a 94, and if there is only 2 plugs on the back, then your CPS is on the front, if 3 plugs, its in the back...Your best bet is grab a repair manual and see exactly what sensors are connected to the harness, etc...It's hard to say what all you would need without it in front me...

If the new harness is from the same year as your truck cant you just swap it out whole I would think it would be plug and play you never know what someone else did when the put the older engine in to make it work. At least that is how i see it am I missing something you didnt say the year of the new engine and harness there are only a few wires different from the main harness to power the computer and any A/C or tranny wires. You are going to have to use the harness for that engine to pass emissions and I believe you need the stickers under the hood for the visual inspection for the new motor and harness you can get them at a ford dealer. For the year of the motor look at the part numbers F6 for the first two digits would be 96 F is 90s and 6 would be the year thats how you can tell the year of the engine your pulling out E-80s F-90s G-00 The first two should be common for all the parts on the engine that are not aftermarket.
 
Oh yea depending on if it has guages or lights you might have to swap the sending units for coolant and oil. And I am hopeing you got the computer with the harness and engine.
