Finally got around to giving my Ranger a tune up. Got the air filter done (god damn the old one was clogged) and started on the plugs. Decided to do the center wire first, but the damn thing wont stay on!!

I'll push it on and it will make a small clicking noise, then slowly pop right back off. No idea what's going on. Do you think that maybe it's been so long since it's been changed that it corroded to the inside of the old wire? There's not alot of corrosion on the nipple where it goes. I'm talking about the area where the plugs all start at the back of the engine.

Will I need to replace this? If so, what he hell is it called and how much should I expect a new one to cost?

I'll check back in. I'm going to go kick some stuff and then finish swapping my plugs/wires and flush the radiator if I can find a bucket.

You mean the one that goes from the igntion coil to the center of the cap?

It should have a plastic clip or the old one should have, that'd you take off and fit onto the new wire.

I'll check on that.. do you mean the large plastic clip that connects to the ignition coil or the other end of the wire? The problem is at the end by the group of plug wires.

Hopefully I wont need a new (distributor cap?) because I have alot of things going on today.

Oh, that side goes to the igntion coil. Not sure why it won't stay on the cap.

Hm.

I'll pop down to advance and pick up a new one. It's only $16 and I should probably replace it anyway.

Just went to start it. The engine moves around alot and the truck sounds horrible. Did I possibly do something wrong or do I just need to give it time/gas?

I might have messed up the order of the wires when I did up my distributor cap. Anyone wanna go out and check the order for me/know it?

No I can't. I put them all in the right order and still nothing.. turns over but won't start.

I have no clue what's going on.

Did you take the distributor out?

The distributor can be set any number of ways. So it would be very important to remember where the wires were. #1 needs to be set at TDC and where ever the rotor is, that's where #1 needs to be. Then follow the order accordingly. Just go with the general order, not the placement according to the diagram.

Ranger44, your a life saver.

I had it all wired up to the diagram, I moved it over two spots to match the (new) distributor. Runs and drives fine, and MAN does it have power now that the air filter isn't all clogged. Seems to idle smoother too.

I don't know how many miles you have on yours but I waited to about 120K to do my fuel filter:shok: After I got the new one on, it helped so much I swore not to let it go so long again. I did all the other maintenance but seemed to have a mental block on the fuel filter.

Try it you might like it.

BTW, doesn't it feel good to have a nice running 3.0? I can't call it a 3.slow, I'd call it a 3.adequate.
