My credo
Confused and Intolerant
I wanted some opinions on this Jeep, should I get it or not?

Talked to the owner and he said he would take $100 straight up if I came and got it.

Well, its almost 4 hours away from my house.

I really want a jeep, but it needs a lot of work. When I think about it, the drive system on those alone is probably work maybe $200 or so. And the engine moreso since it runs.

Since I want a restore project, I need some advice, suggestions, help, etc.

SPECS:
1950's CJ-5
4-cylinder w/ 3spd Standard
High and Low 4WD
Smokes a little, but runs good

Here it is: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120597161384

It will need brakes, rust work, interior work, and a title.

How much is a title?

you dont have the money to restore it. there will be other jeeps, just save up and get a good running dd for now.

looks like a rusted out basketcase of crap. probably why he is trying to get rid of it for less than scrap value.

Well, you see, I can have anything on the road in a few weeks work with my shop, just need the time more than the money. I could have MY truck road legal tomorrow, if I worked literally ALL day on it. But its not worth the time since it needs brakeline and I have never done that before. AND my truck also has a bad habit of electrical cutout.....

Like I said, the drive system, engine, transmission, PTO, and etc. on that Jeep are worth more than $100.

then get it and sell the parts. then use the money to buy a good dd.

no matter how much work you can do, you will need parts and they will most likely be hard to find and expensive.

Thats the plan, and whatever I cannot sell, there is scrapers around here that take this stuff for free to NY for recycle money =).

Be 3 weeks and I have everything gone.

I have the money, I just need somone near Pottstown to meet me 1/2 way!
I can give then $30 for a U-Haul rental and $15 for gas.

Is it 4x4?

It is worth $100 as a project, judging by your other thread you are needing reliable transportation... dunno if I would call this that without looking at it. It might go forever or it might fall in a heap in 10 more miles. The tub looks pretty decent though.

It has a PTO, so that would make it more unique. Also means that it may have had the snot pulled out of it.

On a somewhat related note, dad's CJ-2A has the same drawbar. We were trying to decide if it was homemade or not, that one is a twin so it must not be.

x2 those old pto's are like gold to collectors. should double or triple your money back on the pto alone if it's decent shape. as for the rest of it, a real crap shoot looking at the engine. especially with whatever that thing is zip tied to the radiator brace rod. just my $.02.

does he have a title to it?

If not, leave it. it is worth parts only.

as for brake lines, those are fairly easy to do. I had to replace the brakeline on my 87 mercury grand marquis about 10 years ago from the proportion valve all the way back to the axle. I ended up having to fabricate one from a straight piece of brake line. cost me under 20 bucks, and that included buying the pipe bender and a can of brake fluid.

seriously, you want a car that you can title and get tags for. I have a friend that restored a 46 Willys Jeep with his Dad, and I think his looked as bad as that one does. they did all the work themselves and had to pretty much weld in all sorts of new metal. He said the body was almost twice as heavy after replacing the rusted sections. Looked great when it was done tho.

now ya get it, its a parter =P, I just wanted to get it for the axles and parts to sell, and MAYBE see about restoring it before I part it out. But that PTO will definately be goin for $500, if it needs a little work, $100

Just ditching the top will greatly increase the value of it. That is where all the really nasty looking rust is. Provided it runs decent, do that, clean up the engine compartment and you could probably get some decent money out of it as it sits.

Parts for a CJ-5 are still pretty common.

the top is fiberglass

HOW MUCH DOES A TITLE COST!

The PTO needs at least one seal...

And the sides of the top are not fiberglass or they wouldn't be rusting.
