Well I just went for a drive after a fuel injector swap, wiring harness observation, new 4 gauge cable swap on the alternator and starter harness, and a front main seal repair.

Ranger still seemed a little off. While stopped I got out and heard a rattle sound. Turns out my catalytic converter is internally damaged I guess. $180 installed for a new one. On my way now.

According to the guy at the muffler shop a bad cat can make the motor run wierd and idle bad too! Was that my problem to begin with??? GEEEZ!

Ok, well I had the exhaust fixed.......now on to the hard shifting into second and fourth.......sigh

Hmmmm...sounds a bit like my truck...only you seem to know what you're doing and I don't have a clue...lol!

On the bright side, you shouldn't have to do any work on it for a few years...

Well it sounds really good now and the misfire appears to be gone too! I guess everything I did solved the problem. The new injectors are really quiet. I'm glad I did everything but I still have a hard shifting problem going into 2nd and 3rd. But only upon accelleration.

I don't know.....

Edit: Not going into second and third. Going into second AND fourth....oops

No, It doesn't end.

This is kinda like how I now would have been better off buying a brand new ranger than the amount of $$ I have put into my truck in repairs, just to keep a stock 2wd ranger going down the road. :annoyed: Oh well, I can't get the $$ back, so I might as well keep driving it.

gotta love 'em, otherwise why would we own them, or better yet why would we drive ourselves nut trying to fix them:icon_thumby:

The second and fourth gear hard shifting is usually caused by bad syncronizers (some call them blocker rings), the shift forks could be worn too, if you do alot of driving, or off-roading using second, and fourth gear, the main cause of syncro, and fork wear is caused by a constant load being put on the shifter while it's in those two gears, like holding on to, or resting your hand on the shifter. Sounds like some trans work is in your future

Yeah, I just edited my thread. I meant to say 2nd and 4th. It's not that it's really hard, but it just does'nt want to go into those gears until a couple seconds after trying to put it in gear. All the other gears are fine and IT ALL works good when deccelerating and putting it in any gear.

Tranny work?........great, just what I wanted to hear.......haha

Yep you need "atleat" new syncronizers for 2nd and 4th hopefully, and maybe even the gears themselfs if it pops out of those gears on deceleration, do you have to hold the shifter in those gears while decelerating so it doesn't pop out of gear? if not the gears should be ok, if so replace the gears also.

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt!

Do you know how to shift without the clutch? If you do and you're any good at it try shifting into 2nd and 4th w/out the clutch if it dosen't want to go without the clutch it's not the syncros(sp) If it does go easy, you know what it is. but u can always just learn to shift at the right time and not take the tranny out. haha. my 92's tranny is hard to get into 2nd but i've got it figured out and i'm lazy so i just make it work.

No, it does'nt pop out of any gear at any time it just does'nt go into 2nd or 4th when I need it to.

When I'm driving (in motion) and try to put it in gear if I rev the motor up a bit while the clutch pedal is depressed then it goes in.

This problem actually started when I did the 2.5 swap about a week or two ago, but I can't see how it's related you know? Thanks

Same tranny/clutch/pressure plate, new flywheel? If so i know this is a pain in the ass since u just got it together, but u might try replacing the pilot bearing which would've been in the motor.... if it's bad then that could cause problems getting it in gear, although i dunno why it would only do it in 2nd and 4th instead of all the gears :dntknw: hmmm.

You know Bryan, after reading your post I was just telling my wife how I did'nt replace the pilot bearing. I just reused the old one that came with the 2.5 and greased it up a bit.

I bet you're right about that being the culprit as it looked kind of old but I thought I could get away with it.

Considering all the work I've already done to this truck I might as well yank the tranny and get it right you know? I probably won't do it until this weekend however.

Allen

A bad pilot bearing would only effect 4th gear, since 4 gear is 1 to 1 it basicaly makes the input and output shafts one complete shaft, a bad pilot bearing wouldn't effect how the easy or hard it goes into 2nd gear.
