Will I destroy my differential...

So what would be the best rear end for me? No serious offroading, mostly highway driving, and I want to avoid having to be pulled out of a hole by a second or third hand backhoe operator.

Marking the nut, removing it and replacing a pinion seal, then reinstalling the nut is common practice. I guess the 16 Ford trained technicians I work with (myself included) are all wrong then? It can be done that way without any ill effects. Don't leave it loose, and don't overtighten it enough to crush the sleeve anymore and you will be fine.

hey man i wasn't saying this method doesn't work but it is NOT the proper way to do it.

im a full time auto tech too and i do it this way also because the service writers would shit bricks if i took the time to do it properly

Alright i found this product, the detriot truetrac that sounds perfect for me. I just don't know if i should upgrade the rest of my axle first or just get the 8.8 ls instead. The truetrac is maintenance free save fluid exchange once in a long while.

I hear you there, we're charging out pinion seals at 0.5hr so yea, there would be no time to remove the carrier and check actual bearing preload.

I guess it's one of those work smart, not hard things.

transcendtient, a TrueTrac would probably about the perfect differential for you. It is very similar to the Torsen differential in the fx4 rear ends.

I would highly recommend a truetrac.

So keep the 7.5 and throw the truetrac in. What about the front diff? Should I even worry about it?

Dont worry about the front diff. I highly doubt you will do any wheeling that would be more than 4x4 with a rear locker can handle.
