Hey everyone couldn't really find an exact answer so i decided to see if anyone will know. I just did an 8.8 swap on my ranger, the only problem is it has 4.56 gears in it and im only running 31's so its a little too much. i have the stock 3.55 gears out of my 2002 f-150 from doing a 4.56 swap on that and was wondering if i could use them in my ranger. the axle in the f-150 is an 8.8 also.

ok good, didn't know if the carriers were different. i wish i could just go with bigger tires but that will have to wait.

You can't just pull the old gears out and stick the other ones in though, unless you have all the proper tools needed to deal with setting the pinion depth, ring gear backlash, bearing preloads, and making sure the gears mesh properly.

I would agree, assuming you have the 4.0L, throw some 33s on it.

3.55's with 31's is a really bad idea...and it will probably adversely effect your mileage.

also, if you do swap the gears (dont neglect setup like junkie said, which requires an assortment of shims, a dial indicator, an inch-lbs torque wrench, and gear marking compound), i believe the f-150's 8.8 is 31 spline...versus a ranger 8.8's 27 spline...so you'll have to re-use the rangers side gears.

if this is an exploder 8.8 then your golden.

Fixed it for you.

not the first time. for some reason, my brain is hooked on the number 27 and i always call 28 spline axles 27 spline.

i used to try and remember "28"...but i figured 27 is close enough, so i gave up :icon_rofl:

You're probably thinking of 27 spline D35 axles.

no, its just the 7.5 and 8.8 for some reason....

i ought to lay off the drugs, but they are just so damn good! :tease:

yeah i know about all that. I've done gears a couple of times. I'm not changing the carrier, just making sure it didn't have a different offset to compensate for the ring thickness. thanks
