So I have a 2007 Ford Ranger Sport (3.0 Manual) and a 1999 Ford Ranger XLT (4.0 OHV Auto).

My 3.0 in the 2007 is developing a pretty good knock. I'm going to try a couple of quick fixes (like thicker oil, etc) and see if it helps, but I've at least been tossing around the idea of swapping in the 4.0 OHV from my '99 into this truck as the 4.0 OHV still runs like a fricking champ.

Looking it over, it appears that the 4.0 OHV bolted up to the same M50D-R1 Manual transmission (even though my current one is bolted to the 4R55E Auto).

Will these just bolt up? Do I need any sort of adaptor or anything? Hopefully the answer is not and I can just pull the engine. Would make things a lot simpler (and a better possibility). Are there things I'm not thinking of like transmission sensors and such that might screw this up? Or will it just bolt right up?

Information I pulled was from here:

Also, I should note that Minnesota doesn't do any sort of vehicle check where the engine has to be newer then the car so that's not a problem here.

NO. The bolt pattern is different.

No it will not. All engines had a different bolt pattern.

But as far as the 4.0 SOHC vs. OHV is I forgot if they had a different bolt pattern or not. Those are the same IIRC.

They are close.

Not all engines are different... the 2.9l and the 4.0l OHV are the same.

No the SOHC and the OHV 4.0 are different bolt patterns

You know this for a fact? Or you just spewing out what you have read?

The SOHC and the OHV have almost the exact same bolt pattern. 7 of the 8 bolts line up. The only 1 that doesnt is the top left bolt (as viewed from the back of the trans). They had to move that bolt for clearance for the rear timing chain.
I have an OHV trans behind a SOHC engine, using only 7 of the 8 bellhousing bolts.

None of this changes the fact that the 4.0l and the 3.0l are different.

Well junk. Thanks for the tips guys. Suppose it was wishful thinking to hope they would mate up. Time to see if I can source a manual transmission for the 4.0 OHV.
